The following curious observations In
regard to thu transmission of sound have
been carefully verified by an extended
rlcs of experiments. The whistle of a
locomotive is heard 3,300 yards through
tho air; the nolso of a railroad train.
2,600 yards; the report of a musket nnu
thu bark of ft dog, 1,800 yards; an orches
tra or tho roll of iv drum, 1,000 yards;
the human voice readies to the distance
of 1,000 yards; the cracking of frog
000 yards: the chirping of crickets, 8 n
yards, Distinct speaking Is heard in tin
air from below up to a distance of 000
yards, from above, It is only understood
toarango of 100 yards downward. It
has been ascertained that an echo Is well
rellected from tho surface of smooth
water only when the volco comes from
an elevation.
A Justice tn Kent, It. I., recently dis
missed three liquor cases in which crimi
nal acts were clearly proved, on repre
sentation of the counsel for defendants
that the law In tho question "was
troublesome, and that the court should
set it aside."
