cauimmiiier of the North Atlantic lla-H,
dated Cojn Ilnytlon, lSlli l-Ybruury, iiy
Admiral Poore litul culled upon the
providential nresldviit, and after l-i ter
ctintige of civilities acfiunlnteii him with
the object of his visit. The president
nuinmoneil his. cnlilnet, and (he admiral
explained the instruction he had re
ceived from hi governent, namely, that
iirgotallnn were pending lt-tw n
United State." and Man DomlniM-, and
that while they were j ctsdlmr HiHr
irove n.tiiHit nau tiettrmiiud wiili it
own pow er to prevent an Interference on
the part of Haytl or any government
wltb that of the Dominican, and ir any
attempt be made on the Dominican's
during the tiepotatlone, under the Hay
tlen or any other ilap, it would Le re
yarded ai an act of hostility to the
Uulted States ttng, and would provoke
hostilities in return.
The president and secretary of
Haytl express the hope that the friendly
relations now existing between -Haytl
and the United States may not he Inter
rupted, but while they were aware of
their weaknew, they knew their risbts
and would maintain them to the best of
their ability, and tbey must be allowed
to be Judge of their own policy.
Admiral I'oorc afterward learned un
officially that authorities were displeas
ed with what they considered a menace
on the part of the United States govern
ment accompanied with force. The
United States Meamers Serveru and
Dictator arrived at Port-au-Prince ou the
ninth of February. The aay before the
arrival of of the tervern at Port au
Prince, a rumor was in circulation that,
a colll.-ilori occurred at Cape Uaytlen,
between the Nautucket and Uaytlen
Man-of'War. Terror, the late IVquot,
in consequence of the protection given
by the former to the American consul
Jt was also reported by the two pilots
who brought in the fJerrern and Dicta
tor, with a discrepancy as to the result.
On examination of Admiral Poo re the
rumor seemed to be without foundation.
The following Haytleu vessels were at
Port-au-Prince: Jlaratanza Quaker
City: Alexander Polican, Galatea and
Mt. Vernnn. A transport, the Quaker
City, Is dismantled.
