Criminal Statistics Seem to Prove It, but Do Not. The statistics of crime are depress ing. yet the criminals form a very in considerable portion of the population. Crimes are a matter of record. They figure formidably in the census re turns. The virtue of a community is not computable. It is difficult to de termine whether there is more crime relatively to population now than there was 100 years ago. We know that more publicity is given to crime in these days, owing to the wonderful activity of the newspapers and modern faeilities for gathering news. BLACK HILLS PIONEER DIES. Capt Enos McLaughlin 8uccumbs at Age of Eighty Years. Spearfish, S. D., March 28.—One of the oldest pioneers of the Black Hills, Capt. Enos McLaughlin, is dead here at the age of elghtly years. He came to the Black Hills in 18f6, locating in the Garden City mining district. He has been instrumental in advancing the mining Interests of the hills since that time. Killed by Street Car. Burlington, Iowa, March 28. Mrs. W. H. Schwelering, wife of the presid ing elder of the German Methodist church, was run down and instantly killed by a street car. Not Guilty of Abduction. Luverne, Minn., March 28.—Frank Brabender of Adrian was acquitted by a directed verdict in the district court of the charge of abduction. Brabender was charged with abductiong two young girls from this city to Adrian. Build Church at Perham. He was sentenced to two years' imprison ment in the Milwaukee house of cor rection for bribery. A stay of sen tence was denied by Judge Williams and sentence began Saturday. Mr. KwYenor was convicted a short time ago on a charge of accepting a bribe ,of $100 -an April 1, 1899, for furthering a special -privilege. Des Moines, March 28.—Rock Island officials who have been investigating the cause of the wreck of the Rocky mountain limited passenger train near Homestead, Iowa, last Thursday morning, have secured a confession through Sheriff Dietrich from Eric Kutzleven of South Amana, that be pulled spikes and rails loose for the purpose of gratfying his curiosity as to what would happen. Flor ence Kellogg, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Kellogg of this vil lage, was seated near the stove at her home when her dress touched the stove and caught on fire. Her clothing was burned through to the body and all of the hair on the back of her head was burned off. Burglara Also Get Cigars and Liquor In Saloon. Hager, Wis., March 28. Burglars broke into the saloon of Dan Hollinger In this village about midnight. Sev eral slot machines were broken into and about twenty dollars secured. A large quantity of cigars and liquor also was taken. Mr. Hollinger esti mates his loss at about $100 in cash and goods, while the damage done to the slot machines amounts to about $250. Crime moves in spots, dome locali ties in the state seem to have an epi demic of horse thieves. In other lo calities wheat thieves seem to hold the center of the stage.
