Brown A Fine Point Crookston Times: One of the finest points that has arisen at the local United States land of fice in this city for some time past came up today by com munication, when it was asked of the officials whether a person now holding 160 acres of land, obtained by purchase and also a certificate for 160 acres of school land would be entitled to make entry on government land that was open for settlement. By a statute that was passed some time ago, any person who at the time of application holds more than 160 acres of land is dis qualified from making entry on government land in any form* The question as to whether the certificate for school land is in cluded in this was the point that had to be decided. The officials here decided that the person who under such circumstances made application was barred from making further entry. The point is one that never came up in the office here before and quite likely was never brought up in any land office. The decision is an important one in that to a cer tain extent it establishes a rule which will be followed hereafter should any such again. The country included in the district of the big irrigation ditch is rapidly filling up. None of the land to be reclaimed is more than eight miles from the river. Navi gation is not feasible up the river further than the headquarters of the canal on account of the rocky channel, although in high water boats have run to points much farther west. Last summer the government supply boat made a trip as far as Glendive. There is talk of an automobile stage line from Glendive to Bu ford. If established it would be the first auto line of any length in the state, so far as known. Raise Wages of Freight men. An increase of salary for freight conductors and brakemen on the Great Northern has been decided upon and allthatisnowrequired is the approval of President Hill. Conductors will receive $4 per day, the day being determined by the number of miles traveled, and the brakemen will receive an increase of 20 cents per day. This change was decided upon at a recent meeting of the rail road officials and conductors held in St. Paul. If President Hill approves of the raise it is understood that it will go into effect frotn the first of February. This increase does not, at the present time, effect the passenger men. CALL D. cases arise Boat Service on Yellowstone Butte, Mont., Feb. 9.—Boat service will be established on the Yellowstone river from Mondak, the Great Northern town on the line between Montana and North Dakota, to the headgates of the big canal, which is apart of the lower Yellowstone reclamation project, a distance of sixty miles from Mondak and eighteen miles from Glendive, Mont. A large wharf for freight, with passenger waiting rooms, has been built at Mondak, and a spur about a mile in length has been built fr.om the Great Northern Yards to the river bank. A passenger steam boat has been secured. FOR AN ELECTION, of the Williaton Water Users' Associa tion.
