The res' dence portion of the' city is safe from barm. Considered Tornado Proof. Meridian had always considered Itself tornado-proof. Mount Barton and the sand mountain hills were, ac cepted as a sentinel against such dis asters. The Sowashee valley was crossed by the storm, and this was most unexpected, for if ever wind were to swoop down on the city it was ex pected to pass this valley. F. Z. Woodruff, bookkeeper for the Meyer-Neville Hardware company, had' the most harrowing experience of those left to tell the story. He was pinioned under the debris of this five story structure, his foot caught but his body peculiarly protected from in Jury. Workmen are busily engaged in an effort to relieve him, and with saw and hammer he was aided. The fire department has recovered the charred bodies of several negroes taken from the ruins of small tenement? which were in the wake of the wind and fire. Huddle About Fires. Before others of these huddled about bonfires kindled with the debris of their former homes, others sit clus tered and wonder how many more will be found amoAg the dead instead of the miBsing. The property loss cannot be safely estimated, for reports are in conflict. It is safe to estimate the figure at a round million. The largest single loss will probably fall on the Meyer-Ne ville Hardware company. This in stitution is in a totally collapsed con dition. The building is a brick heap. The Meridian Fertilizer company's loss is almost total. It was this build ing that the storm first struck in its mad fury. In a northeasterly direc tion the wind wound its way, tearing a path through a negro settlement. Little is known of the loss of life there. The property loss will not be great. Power Station Destroyed. The power station was visited, and while the tall chimney escaped the fury of the wind, yet other parts of the plant are so demolished that it is said it may be ten days before it is possible to reestablish its lighting facilities. Along north of the power house the storm overturned a few box cart and crossed the tracks of the Alabama & Vicksburg railroad. There is a cluster of depots in this vicinity, and two operators in these were in jured. The buildings were damaged, but no lives lost. The Armour Pack ing company's building barely side stepped the path of the stolen. It was grazed by the flying timbers, but was missed. The Tom Lyle'Grocery com pany was crushed to a heap of splin tered lumber and lire followed its fall. Tonutdo Sweeps Islands. San Francisco, March 5.—The steam ship Mariposa, which has arrived from Tahiti, brings news that on February 7 and 8 a destructive tornado swept the Society islands^ causing damage to the amount of $1,000,000 at Tahiti and presumably a similar amount in Tuamotu islands. The city of Papeete, was inundated and 75 houses were de stroyed, including the American con sulate and French government build ings. Busch Wedding Takes Place. Pasadena, Cal., March 5.—Lieut/ Eduard A. Scharrer, of Stuttgart, Ger many, an officer of the German army, and Miss Wilhelmina Busch, daughter ef Adolphus Busch, of St. Louis, were married at the Church of the Angels, Just outside of this city. Ftank 8. Hollett, Pastor. CABBAGE PATCH TAVERN. Future Pilgrims to the Domicile of Mrs. Wiggs Will Find a Change. Current reports from Louisville, Ky., Indicate the probability that future pilgrims to the shrine of that com munity, literary and otherwise, may pause for refreshment or inspiration at the Cabbage Patch inn. At least, says the New York World, Mrs. Wiggs is disposed to rent her shanty and the would-be lessee has asked for his li cense. It has been observed by grave writers that public houses of enter tainment have often provided the haunts of those prominent in litera ture and the arts. Chaucer cheered mine host at the Tabard Shakespeare, Ben Johnson and their fellows made merry at the Mermaid Congreve and Wycherly had .their revels at the Half Moon, and there are other famous ex amples of England. For our own side of the water we have the. literary tra ditions of the Wayside Inn, we know of Irving listening to strange tales at the old Bull's Head in New York— and we need not mention the late Subway Tavern, of brief but stienuous note. If inns may be the haunts of geni us, they may as well commemorate transfigurations by genius. Mrs. Wiggs underwent one of these. She was without distinction in her own side street till she "was gathered on the point of a pen and placed between book covers. The accomplishment of realizing upon her in letters was note worthy. It is perhaps inevitable that they who go to the patch therefore to wonder shall remain to drink.
