Slater, 37 Williston, N. D. MINNESOTA STATE DEMOCRAT IC COMMITTEE NAMES HIM FOR PRESIDENCY. Ha Is Endorsed by a Vote of 68 to 23 After a Very Interesting Contest— The Bryan Adherents Show Con* •Iderable Strength. St. Paul, March Vt?—Resolutions en dorsing Oov. Johnson for the Demo cratlo nomination for president were adopted by the Democratio state central committee yesterday after ternoon by a vote of 23 to 68, Just a two-thirds vote of the entire mem bership of the oommittee which is 102. The governor took no aotion and did not appear himself. The matter was managed and arranged by Secre tary Frank A. Dayjand other close po litical friends, and necessarily carries the governor's acquiesenoe. It was an interesting battle, for both sides contested every point', both sides being determined to make as good a showing as possible. It be- 00V. JOHN A. JOHNSON. gan with a fight on the proxies pre sented by men on both sides and con tinued, when the resolutions were presented, with an eloquent and ear* nest debate, which lasted two hoars, and ended with a roll call, in which the Bryan men lost out, 08 to 23. All in all, is was one of the most inter esting and best attended meetings a state central committee has ever held In this state. That the Bryan men were able to muster twenty-three votes was really more than the Johnson men expected. They did not look for more than ten or a dozen. Several of them were votes of men who had proxies of members, though most of the proxies voted as the men they represented would have voted. Neither side at any time had any doubt as to the result. It was only a fight to show the outside world wheth er Johnson or Bryan had most friends In Minnesota. Both sides had worked hard to get a* many of their men present as possible, and there were few of the members who were not re* presented. Every question presented, almost, was decided by the same vote. St. Paul won out over Minneapolis In the fight for the state convention, the Bryan men favoring Minneapolis. The date, May 14, was fixed by a un animous vote, but the apportionment was fixed by the divided vote. The resolution Is as follows: Gov. John A. Johnson has twlee brought victory to the democracy of Minnesota. During his incumbency of ths office of governor more reform has been instituted and more remedi al legislation adopted than before In the history of our state. Confidently believing that his nom ination as candidate of the party for the presidency, will bring to our sup port the eleotoral votes of the states in the Mississippi valley and thus se cure a national triumph, we respect fully present to the democracy of the nation the name of John A. Johnson candidate for presidency of the United States, and recommend to the Democrats of Minnesota that they eaose his name to be presented to' national oonventlon at Denver for nomination. The oommittee ruled out James Manahan who held the proxy of A. B. Clair of Grand Rapids. Mr. Man ahan is recognised as Bryan's per sonal representative. Hear Rebbere Qo to SUep.
