WAR TIME PAPERS The Tearing Down of the Mutual life Build ings Brings to Light The former home of The Mu tual Life Insurance Company on the corner of Broadway and Lib erty Street, New York, which was occupied by the Company from May, 1865, 1o May, 1884, and which was still owned by the Company until a few months ago, when the building was sold to the Guaranty Trust Com pany of New York, has been in process of demolition during the summer. About the middle of October the corner-stone was reached, and when it was broken open, the leaden box placed there when the foundations were laid in September, 1863, was disclosed. The Civil War was in progress when the box was sealed and placed in the corner-stone of then the new building, which was one of the largest and handsomest structures in the city, and among the records of the Company are several men tions of this corner-stone box in the Minutes of the Board of Trustees and the Building Com mittee. There were bound copies of the early Annual Reports of the Company, the first one be ing dated 1847, which was the Fourth Annual Report, recap itulating earlier ones. On the fly leaves of this were written in ink brief extracts of the previous three years. Jn the ex tract from the Third Annual Re port the total assets of the Com pany were quoted as being $215, 571.68, the number of policies issued, 2,133. The total amount of assets quoted in the Fourth Annual Report was $322,557.87, and the assets in the Fifth Re port, $550,878.56. This is an in teresting contrast with the pres ent admitted assets of the Com pany, which, as of December 31, 1910, were $572,859,062.98, and the total number of policies is sued was 1,884,468. Of more general inter rest, however, were a number of cop ies of The New York Herald, The New York World, The New York Evening Post, the New York Express, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, and The New York Illustrrated News, which, when unfolded, were ijound to be in excellent condition. All of these paperrs were largely given up to news of the Civil War which was then in progress. The Herald had large outline maps of the various battles and campaigns, and the weekly pa pers were filled with wood-cuts of war scenes. The High Cost of Dying A contributor to the Decem ber Woman's Home Companion makes the following interesting comment: "It has occurred to me. while reading articles on The High Cost of Living, that, apparently, no one has thought of the ter ribly high cost of dying. Does it seem fair that a casket should cost so many times its intrinsic value, because of the pressing need? Should livery men charge double or treble for conveyances at such a time Can you not undertake to show the actual robbery that exists and thrives on the forced purchas ing that often leaves a family almost bankrupt"? That, too, at a time perhaps when its sup port is taken away. 1 hope that you may be able to start a cru sade against such rank injus tice.
