Mail, November 13th Alia Nazimova I sat in the Broadway Theatre last night and watched the greatest actress in the world) Alia Nazimova, in Herbert Bren non's film version of "War Brides." Around me sat as distinguished an audience as any first night' has known this fall. They cheered for five minutes when the picture ended—cheered and shouted for Nazimova and Herbert Brenon. Mr. Brenon appear ed and made a neat speech of appreciation. Mme. Nazimova was unfortunately not present. As I sat and watched the work of the greatest actress in the world I am afraid I thought strange thoughts. I thought that perhaps Nazimova and Herbert Bren on have entered into a conspiracy to make something of motion pictures. I thought of the difference in the work of the great est actress in the world and some who have reaped the golden harvest from pictures. I wondered if any of them seated in the au dience would be more humble in the fu ture—if they would learn something from Nazimova. In the last scene of the picture the women hold Nazimova up over their heads for the king to gaze on. She is dead, hav ing just committed suicide. I could not but think that in presenting her on Broad way in' "War Brides" Herbert Brenon was holding Nazimova up over his head for the motion picture world and the public to gaze at. To gaze at in wonder and awe. DON'T MISS THE BIG GEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR HERBERT BRENON Pr»x«»ntT HAZIM.OVA. Y. Eve. Telegram Nov. 13th PLAYS and PLAYERS At the Broadway Theatre last night Mme. Nazimova the Russian actress, made her debut as a film actress in "War Brides." "War Brides" introduces Mme. Nazi mova to the screen in he same role in which she made her greatest stage suc cess. The scenario was based upon Mar ion Craig Wentworth's play. One of the unique features of the production is that it is a play about war without showing battles. It deals with the background of war and not with the fighting front. Yet, while not pretending to be a por trayal of conflict, one scene was built for this production which probably surpasses anything done on this continent to show actual war conditions. This was a huge trench, four stories deep, in which the life of the soldiers is shown and the sudden and unexpected manner in which whole companies may be killed without even seeing the enemy. Nazimova as Joan, the widow of a young officer, and Gertrude Berkeley as the officer's mother, have two roles which for emotional intensity probably never have been equalled on the screen. Herbert Brenon, who made the produc tion, has given Miss Wentworth's drama its full epic sweep. 1 FRIDAY and SATURDAY MATINEE and NIGHT MAY 18 and 19
