Murphy are home from an extended tour of the wvHt visi iujr Seattle, fort'in'1. V^npouvpr, Victoria and Spokane. Theyenjoyed a fine ride uu in- oi ^au. Tie Major states that while the corpora tions are making all kinds of money in the west, such as min ing:, fishine, lumber and rail roading, 'he man of moderate means has l'ttle chance to pet ahead. Indians do most of the fishing and sell their fish to the big companies at 2 cents a pound. There is not enough fruit raising and farming done to keep 5 per cent of the people of the coast states. Of course, the Orient and Alaska will build up the west and somewhere there is to be _a second New York, perhaps it will be San Francisco which already has half a million population. At Vancouver, they enjoyed ..a drive thru Stanley park, nine% miles around, which has natural trees ever 400 feec in height. People there live principally from the tourists. Freedom and Vicinity. Lillian Nordqulst was among the aick Friday. A man may live with many, but must die alone. Matilda and Hattie Abraham drove *o Mincft Saturday Mrs. H. C. K/uchenbecker was on the siek list last week. Miss Thompson Is again boarding with W. K. Foster and family. School began in the new school ••"house Monday with eleven in attend ance. There are three threshing rigs in Freedom, and Gull & Underdahl are expected soon. Miss Elsie Abraham drove thru Stringtown Thursday taking sub scriptions for the Independent. Ernest Skaggs brought out a brand new separator Thursday and is again busy threshing in this neighborhood. J. Divig is threshing for Fred Will man and Theodore Silken. Toftner Bros, are at Mr. Hegle's and Skaggs is at Kuchenbecker's. It is rumored that there will soon be another rubber tired "carry-all" in the neighborhood. We are won dering how many it will carry anyway. They say that—There will soon be a store for general merchandise. There will be a postoffice in Free dom before Christmas. Wedding fcella will soon ring out. Arrested For Sleeping. Nelson Grass, a small greenish looking fellow, was arrested in Jobe's sleeping. When Jobes' clerk locked up to go to dinner, he did not no tice the sleepy individual lying on a bench, apparently asleep. Two men peered thru the glass from the out side and seeing the man. notified the police. The state's attorney consid ered that there was no case against ^im, so after he had spent nearly a •^week in the county jail, he was turned noose. Grass hereafter will do his steeping outside of Minot. Phone 248 MINOT, VJ TfT^Jr SQUARE DEALING! That's what it means to you to trade with us. Yours for good, honest dealing, GLEVEN & HANSON, MINOT, N. D. Another Man Raised Hogs. There is no finer drove of hogs in the county than J. A. Colvin raised north of town. He has 14 Poland China shoats fattened on spelts, that out class any he ever raised on corn. "That's all tom-follery about one's not being able to raise hogs unless you raise corn." Mr. Colvin said. "I have a big pasture of rape, millet and speltz and that's about all the feed that they need in the summer. For winter grind speltz for them." Largest Bond Contract in the World. Devlne, Stenersen & Co., the agents of the National Surety company, in this city, give us the interesting In formation that their company has just closed a contract with the Mod ern Woodmen of America for guar anteeing the honesty of over twenty two thousand local lodges officers cov ered by one bond. It is the laTgest bond in the world and Is a very bulky document,- the entire bond weighing approximately fifty pounds. A IX* of Flour. During. the past eighteen months Henry Au^lander, the baker, bought from the Ruaeell-Mlller Milling Co., of Qrand Forks, twelve ear lo^ds of flour. Mr. AuBlander uses this flour exclusively in his bakery and has made arrangements to retail It also. The Russell-Miller flour Is known as the Diamond grade, and Is a very high class flour. Mr. Auslander makes 1,500 loaves of bread daily and will soon reach the 2,000 mark. Farmer Meets Horrible Death. Godfrey Ward met a horrible death .near Overly, in Bottineau county. He jumped backwards from a grain tank to the ground, striking a pitch fork handle. The fork standing up right in the ground. The fork hand le penetrated his body several inches, lacerating his bowels. Several phy sicians tried in vain to save his life. Land of tlie Midnight Sun.
