WW" •. We have inside inform^,,. **"*',49 y* •i ~,iyy &,>••#« There are about four hundred people who are proud to call Flaxton their home and thus strictly speaking, Flax ton is the home of the Four Hundred. We believe that there is more rigs on the streets and more business done to the square foot at Flaxton than at any other town of the size that we ever vis ited. From here the Soo branches out to Ambrose, 70 miles, on which line the steel is now being laid and this fact alone is going to make this place an im portant central point. A new depot is just being completed a round house and an enlarged water tank about to be built. Another proof of the rapid strides which Flaxton is making is that the school board has found it necessary to finish the upstairs and tit up one more room in their new school house which was built only last year and they will now employ three teachers and wnl also have a high school department. The village is organized into a special school district and has aboard of edu cation of its own composed of the fol lowing gentlemen: L. N. Bottom who keeps one of the largest general stores, president Bertie Nelson, vice president of the Citizens State bank J. O. Ho viand of Hovland & Swenness, hardware and implement merchants J. S. Gee, the obliging busi ness manager of your Uncle Samuel's postotfice department at Flaxton Dr. Paulson, the busy and popular Flaxton physician, directors, and W. E. Burgett, of the Citizens State bank, who has just lately succeeded R. B. «wn as secre tary to the board. I -.•••• ••-••••'•••'.» l^e only hesitation and mental rec-v- ,'*• which Mr. Burgett had in a: this highly lucrative office was, tnat, being desirous of doing as well if not a little better than his predecessor. Mr. Town, and that gentleman having re fused to accept any compensation for his services during the past year, he did not know but what it might be expected of him that he should pay something for the privilege. Two new churches have just been completed, one presbyterian, and one of the Norwegian Synod, which speaks well for the public spiritedness of its citi zens. Rev. A. Buckneberg is the pastor of the latter while Rev. J. W. Kingston, of Bowbells, has the former in charge. Considering the amount of railroad building through the country Flaxton will have the largest territory of any of the neighboring towns, and her large amount of trade can be judged some what by the fact that the five grain ele vators have been kapt open and grain coming in all summer. By way of public enterprises may be mentioned the Farmer's and Merchant's Independent Telephone Co. which is just getting ready for business and will have a local exchange in the village and party lines thru the country, besides connections with the long distance phones, the only farmers mutual fire in surance company in the county, and Flaxton Belt Guide Co., which has been incorporated for the purpose of manu facturings belt guide invented by that ingenious Flaxonite blacksmith and machinist, M. E. Degree. All branches of business are prosper ing up that way but nothing would seem to come up to what the hotels are doing. The amount of traffic thru that part of the country incident to the ex traordinary rapid development, and es pecially the large and ever increasing number of commercial travelers it ap pears would make this point a veritable mecca for hotelmen. The Independent scribe, while there, made several calls on our subscribers CHOICE FARM LANDS IN MINOT LAND DISTRICT. He comes pretty near looking after every possible want of the traveler. I. G. IVERSON Is the proprietor of one of Flaxton's busy restaurants. FERDINAND JENSEN Is the owner of Jensen's first addition to Flaxton, which is located only 80 rods east of Main St. and is insido the corpo rate limits. This end of town will un doubtedly make the most desirable resi dence section, both the city school and the two churches being located there. M. C. PAUL Has just recently assumed the manage ment of the Florence Rooming House and is doing a splendid business. The Pauls keep their house in good shape and having the best location in town they are naturally on top. Who is the Knocker. The Morning Buzzard would ike the people of Minot to be ieve that the Independent is a 'knocker" for this city, just be cause the Independent fought to ceep Senator Hansbrough from dividing the Minot land district. Did the Reporter ever turn over its hand to help keep the Minot land district intact? We can positively state that it did not do so. In fact, the former editor, Geo. W. Wilson, put forth every effort to secure its division that he might receive the ap pointment as register, which he ultimately did. Does the Re porter blame the Independent Jor trying to keep the foxy sena tor from dividing the district. Our business men know who the knockers are. It's not neces sary to tell them. Minot is the jest city in the state as it is, but any land man or lawyer will tell you that their business has fallen off a good deal just in the past few days. If you don't believe, we can name you a dozen who will tell you the same thing. Would you call the Independ ent a "knocker" for trying to re tain several thousand dollars worth of business for our busi ness and professional men every year? Why, the Buzzard's state ment is simply absurd. Interesting Cases at Williston. Judge Palda is at Williston this week where he is interested in a couple of dozen cases. The fa mous Denny case is on. A. J. SCHULTZ best that Rabbi Butchers Meat for Jews. It will be interesting for the Hebrews about the state to know that in this city there is a Rabbi who tends to the butchering for the Jews. This class of people are extremely careful of what they eat, especially in the meat line and it seems that they are much wiser in this particular than most of the classes of peo ple. In butchering beef, the best looking animals are selected, and after being thrown to the floor, the Rabbi cuts the animal's throat with along sharp knife, as sharp as a razor, two slashes doing the deed. After the blood has been drained from the body, the ani mal's lungs are examined and if found to be diseased in any de gree, then all of the meat thrown away.
