WITCH lul hr Baeklct "Light from th« Watclunan.** Chas- H. Lewis, one of Ward county's hunters, has been kind enough to leave us a photograph of himself and live trophies of last fall's hunt, taken by Her manson Bros, of White Earth, on his return from the hunting fields along the Missouri river in the western part of Ward county. Mr. Lewis is an old timer in North Dakota, having come to the state in the winter of 1888, and was one of the drivers of the old stage route running from Devils Lake (or Fort Totten) to Mitchell, South Dakota, then Da kota Territory, gaining a reputa tion as a thorough and competent, as well as an accommodating driver, and a man who could be depended on in all cases of emer gency, as was shown on several occasions one, which is worthy of mention, being when the coach was held up in Columbia, Brown county, N. D. For this instance the would-be robber was somewhat surprised to find himself looking into the muzzle of a rifle, the result being that Mr. Road Agent spent three years in Yankton prison for his trouble. After leaving the mail route he engaged in farming for a few years, until the latter part of the 80's, when he was burned out, losing over three thousand dol lars in stock, implements, grain and buildings. Then for a few years he put in his time working on ranches and doin^ mason work during the warm months and putting in the winter hunting and trapping. Being an expert shot he com- The Little Lawyer Man. It was a little lawyer man Who softly blushed as he began Her poor, dead husband's will to scan. He smiled, thinking of his fee, Then said to her, so tenderly, "You have a nice, fat legacy." When, next day, he lay in bed With bandages upon his head, He wondered what on earth he said.—The Green Bag. Call ar our store, please, for a free sample of Dr. Shoop'a "Health Coffee." This just suited his rov ing spirit, so he presented him self at Bismarck, passed the ex amination and was sent to Fargo, where he was sworn into the Government service and sent to Fort Snelline: Minn., where he joined the 45th Regiment, U. S. V, Inf. Soon after his company was or dered to the Philippines, where he served 22 months as a sharp shooter and scout with credit to himself and regiment, securing an honorable discharge when his regiment returned to California in June, 1901. In 1892 Mr. Lewis came to War:! county and located on the Missouri river, doing mason work and working qn ranches, mean time keeping his trusty rifle in good working order, as there are plenty of wolves which have done a great deal of damage among the stockmen along the river. Mr. Lewis' unerring aim with the rifle has brought him in over $600 in the past two years in bounty besides what he has re ceived for the pelts. Mr. Lewis has numerous friends who call on him in the fall to guide them through the jungles and scare out the deer so that tiiey may get a better chance to show their skill as huntsmen, and meanwhile Char ley is still on the river and ready for anything that comes along. The above photograph shows o'dy few of the trophies of last fall's hunt, but goes to show that he understands his business. R. M. Tuttle, for many years editor of the Mandan Pioneer, has changed his mind regarding the initiative and referendum law, which he fought so hard while conducting his paper, fle is now at Oregon and in a recent letter says he thinks such a law a good thing. Such a law would put important questions UD to the masses who would be more likely to do what is right than dishonest politicians. A.F. Rheumatism I have found a tried and tested cure for Rheu mutism! Not a remedy that will straighten the distorted iimbs of chronic cripples, nor turn bony growths back to llesh again. That is impossible. But I can now surely kill the pains und pau^s of this deplorable disease. In Germany—with a Chemist in the City of Darmstadt—1 found the last ingredient with which Dr. SIioop's Rheumatic Remedy was made a perfected, deiM-ndaMe prescription. Without that last ingredient. 1 successfully treated many, many cases of Rheumatism but now. at last, it uni formly cures all curable cases of this* heretofore much dreaded disease. Those sand-like pronular wastes, found in Rheumatic Wood, seem to dissolve aud pain' away uijder U« action oi this remedy a* freely as does sugar when added to pure water. And then, when dissolved, the#* poisonous waste* freely pass from the system, and the cause of Rheumatism is gone forever. There is now no real need—no actual excuse to suffer longer with out help. We sell, and in conlidence recommend Dr. Shoop's Rheumatic Remedy A. P. SLOCUM. HORSES FOR SALE! Twenty head of Western horses all broke: good weight. Wm. CARROLL, MINOT, N. D.
