il .• m*-"-*•**-«• Tornado and Hail Storm It seeni3 that ihe hail storm of Sunday morning covered a widvr one to the south. The unrighteous city however, was not entirely passed up. A straight wind followed the st'orm doing some damage in certain p.uts of the county. At Des Lacs the roof of Fred Becker's barn n* taken off and some other damage done. The Cbaa. Fuller barn at Des Lacs was blowtn down. Several buildings at Berthold suf fered damage from the wind, and a report from Velva states that some damage was done. Reports from the country state that while some of the grain was pounded to some extent, and knocked down, little if any damage was done ex cept to garden, truck, and this will recover. Most of the grain was too thick, and if it was thinned out a lit tle it will probalbly be all the better. Some queer things are related of the Btorm. Out at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joitn Stowell, six miles south of town, the wind carried a ladder quite a distance, /to which a calf had been tied. The ladder and calf went over"and over a number of times, and his calfship thought he was all in if he had the ability to reason at all. The rope finally broke and the calf got up and liimped off. At the same farm, an old hen was liftted oft a nest of chickens and the little chicks driven into the bail storm. The mother instinct lead the old hen to run out into the thickest of the hail where she gathered every chick under her wings and there 3he sat all during the storm, saving every one of her brood. No artist can ever paint the beau ties of the clouds just before the storm arrived. The sun was just com ing up away over in the northeast and the rays shone on the clouds in the west far redder than fire. The sun itself had a peculiar hue. Many people became alarmed at the fierce aspect of the clouds and took to their cellars. David Crittenden, who is confined in the county jail, charged with the horrible crime of having intercourse with his sixteen year old daughter, cannot furnish the necessary bonds will likely remain in Jail until after his trial—and then some. Crit tenden is a Velva farmer and the father of eleven children. The daugh ter who brings the charges against her father, is a bright girl, a graduate •of the Velva schools, and stated to an officer that the father had been committing this crime since she was twelve years of age, and that he also committed the crime on a younger daughter who is fifteen years of age: The daughter has been staying at the home of the Velva mars hall, and at tending school, and it is to him ahe first confided in her secret. flt young man who had been con verted at a Methodist camp declared 0ist all pride andselfoonceit had been taken out of his heart TO prove it he said he wosld go down among the audietioe and kiss an old colored srompo. As he went/down the aisle the* did colored woman rose to her feet and said: "Look a hyer, Ibruddah, you' may hafb no pride, but I has yon crint Hobsonize me 'to all dese whlfe«Silks." The make-up man on the Souris *3 evidently maf tec of a WbcriBt. He pat the #»llowing iten&enrer the adve^Msm iat of a tflrd .texm candidate: "If scope of country than was at li^st ier or his path rougher. Most of the anticipated. HfeaHNin Miller from Donnybroek Wffo was arrested some time age, changed with raps, by a woman whom he-v*» driving into the country, and released on bonds, has been arrested agafcr, this time charged with petit larceny, and is boarding with Sheriff Lee, Ftal V. Very few people would intentionally add to another' load or make his burden in life heav- made. Can anything be more cruel than to discourage a soul who is struggling to do the best he can, to throw! sfcumb ling blocks in the path of those who are trying to get on in the world against great odds? No life Is just the same after you have once touched it. Will you leave a ray of hope or one of despair, a flash or light or a somber cloud across some dark life each day? Will you by your thoughtless cruelty deepen the shadow which hangs over the life, or will you by kindness dispel it alto gether? No matter how you f*el or what is disturbing your peace of mind, never allow yourself to send out a discouraging, a cruel or an unkind word or thought.—From Success Mag* azine. -pAW'Vuf RIES CANNED WITH CUT COOKI !C5. Have your jars perfectly clean and dry, then take equal part3 of fresh berries and sugar and mix and ma3h thoroughly. To accomplish this, take only a small quantity in a dish at a time that you may be sure that ev ery berry is mashed. Put into the jars, and seal immediately, inverting the jar for a short time before putting away. The work is easily and quickly done as there is no heating. Miy berries canned in this way last summer kept •perfectly and have preserved their delicious flavor unimpaired.
