Thieves entered the barnyard of C. A. Lunde, living west of Nansen, a few nights ago, and not only stole about 200 bushels of oats, but butch ered a fat hog and carried it off, too. Governor Frazier announces the ap pointment of N. A. Mason of Wimble don as his private secretary. Mason was formerly engaged in the furni ture and undertaking business and will be in fine shape to care for the "stiffs" that may haunt the office of the new governor. John Andrews, for four years depu ty secretary of state under Tom Hall, goes to Washington, having accepted a position as private secretary to Con gressman Norton. John is one of the best of the "tribe" in the newspaper game of North Dakota. A few miles north of Michigan oc curred a fatal shooting accident last Thursday when Olaf Kampen, who worked on his brother's farm was kill ed. The brothers were going for a load of hay and Olaf was standing in the rear of the rack with a shotgun. What caused the gun to discharge will never be known. His brother heard the report and turned to see Olaf fall. He, lived about half an hour but did not re gain consciousness. The discharge en tered the face near the nose. W. J. Ratckin of Oakes, is building an ice boat in the Salzer Lumber com pany's yard. The boat is twenty-eight feet long and Mr. Ratckin expects to start from Oakes by way of the Jim river and go all the way to St. Louis in his new boat. John McLeod of Wales has been awarded a five passenger touring car for the best bushel of wheat that has been sent to St. Paul. This wheat was raised here in Dresden township and John is mightily pleased about it. Miss Louise Pety, at one time ma tron of the Florence Crittenton home in Fargo, but recently matron of the Y. W. C. A. at Pasadena, Cal., was knocked down by a motorcycle in that city recently and killed. The rider of the machine was the son of the sheriff of Los Angeles county. Arthur L. Paul is business manager of the college paper, The Student, and as sugh is making a big financial suc cess. Tritt Harris, colored, aged 80, for thirty years a resident of Bismarck froze to death in his log cabin here dur ing Tuesday's big storm and the body was discovered today. Tritt was born in slavery and was regarded a wizzard by members of the local colored fra ternity. About five years ago J. C. Field, county surveyor at Williston conceiv ed an idea for the improvement of guiding torpedoes. He laid his ideas before the navy department at Wash ington and the experts of that depart ment have been working on the plans. A few days ago Mr. Field received a call to hurry to Washington to witness the working of his device. It is claim edit may prove a great invention. Parshall Leader: As was to be ex pected the German peace proposals were seized upon by the grain gamb lers to pound down the price of wheat. We have heard it argued over and ov er again, generally by someone in the grain business, that grain gambling conduces to the farmers' good, a pal pable falsity. While it is true that the grain gamblers have the price up and down, in the ultimate effect thousands of them cop off a fat living at the bus iness, and their profits come from the farmers and fools who imagine they can beat them at their own game. Were grain gambling and grain gamb ling devises made impossible it would be for the betterment of all—except ing the grain gamblers alone—it would put them out of busirtess. NOTICE.
