You'll find it Amjm com ing, too. The rich to bacco taste lasts and lasts. You don't have to take a fresh chew so often. Any man who uses the Real Tobacco Chew will tell you that. The following: excellent read by Mrs. Kara I Hkd heard of this man's mean ness and miserliness, of course, and to say that I dreaded to have the day come when I .should be asked to spend the night'in the home is putting the matter mildly, to say the least. You may wonder that the teacher was ever asked to this home, but the fath er evidently did not care to fly too much in the face of custom—so the teacher was asked. We had lots of fun on the two-mile walk home, but as we neared the home, so-called, all hilarity ceased. The children lowered their voices, and walked along sedately, and the only word that approaches the look in thejr eyes is furtive. The father happened not to be at home when we arrived, so the kiddies grew more natural, shyly introducing "teach er." We had a nice little, visit until the sound of wagon wheels warned us of the approach of the Lord qpd Master, Man then it was pathetic to see the way that family withdrew into its shell of fear—I fear my teeth were chatter ing in sympathy. I don't know just what I did expect was going to hap pen, but I do know that I wondered why I had come. Presently a big husky chap came in, speaking pleas antly enough to the stranger, but snapping at the kiddies and ordering the wife around. At supper, a tray cloth marked my place, and one or two specially prepared dishes oh, yes, shared by the Master of the household, but not by the rest of the family. I nearly choked on that food. I remember wondering if God would forgive me if I could think up a lie convincing enough and tell' it with enough force to make it plausible to get me away from that place before night. But I was not accustomed to breaking the ninth commandment—and besides my brain simply would not work probably paralyzed as was my epiglottis. I nave never fully figured out the eth ics of tlhe case yet. Anyway I staid all night—never sleeping a wink—but the gloom and misery and cringing fear of that household haunts me at this late date. I was sixteen. There might have been times in those sixteen years when I felt very much abused at not being granted all my childish desires —but there never was a time I felt a cringing fear—there was al ways lots of good wholesome food, plenty of warm clothing, books, mag azines, music, love and laughter— and if there" was anyone who' went without during the lean years that came occasionally be sure we children did not know it. It was niothar and father who went without, if anyone— so. this experience made a dreadful impression upon me. Have you ever known a Man like this one? If "not, have you ever known a fam ily that lived just for themselves alone, every interest centering around the home life No time for any other family, no money for any in terest outside the home—in fact no interest outside their own narrow sphere? Food, yes, for the family. Clothes, yes for the family. Music, yes, for the family. Books and Mag-' azines, yes for the family. The kid-' dies could play among them selves no neighbor's children need apply for admission. If there was misfortune in the neighborhood all well and good, let the rest take care of it— thfs family had All it could do to lode after its own—if everyone did as well the world would be a better place—etc., etc. .- The father and mother loved the kiddies and probably eacs other, but it was the family for all, and all for the family—no church interests—no philanthropic interests—nothing but narrowness all through. Have you ever known such a family? Ill war rant you have. HfcVe you ever known a church where the members were interested only in their own affair*—mo time, no money, no prayer*,' no study,- for any thing except itheir own church—and very little of tfoat usually? If the minister ever liffcedvhis voice to tell of ifche outside need the p&rishoners wandered why VK-fc:,:-!: if*"* RELATION Of MISSION ARY INTEREST TO THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE 1 he didn't remember thit the pelrs needed cushions, and the aisles needed carpeting, and be «iy sure his aalary was not paid, na they did not know when it was coming from—and as for them, they thought charity begun at home-rand staid them tooJnoct likely. When they tead the Bible, as some of than (Continued on page I.) ry y. & W iiit aper was Dickinson at a Presbyterian recent meeting of tl Missionary society: Just what does an interest in Mis sions do for the spirituality Of a church? In order to answer the question intelligently it may be nec essary to ask several other ques tions. Have you ever known a mis erly man one who had a disposition that would make the angels weep who was so stern that his children and even his wife werev afraid of him? One who believed in getting along with as few of the necessities of life as possible, and used most of those necessities himself—miserly, in every way except where he himself was concerned and then he was gen erous? A man who, so far as feel ing that his family was one of his vital responsibilities, and deserved the best care and provision he could make-for them, was a cipher? I once knew such a man. Ho was the father of two kiddies in the little country school I taught the summer 1 was sixteen. It was the. custom in thai district !\r every family to in vite the teacher home to spend the night at least once during the term —oh, no, not a boarding around pro cess—but as a matter of hospitality I thought I was very much grown-up at that time, but I have since come to the conclusion that I was very much of a kiddie myself.
