Km Alt tt .J K. •f Training School Wins Sweep Stakes at Missouri Slope Fair Farmer 'Governor, J. M. Devine, who has been superintendent of the Training School at 'Mandan for the past five years, visited with friends in Minot for a short time Tuesday morning. Mr. Devine is making a fine record with his boys and girls at the school. The Training School had an exhibit of 42 varieties of vegetables at the Missouri Slope Fair at Mandan, all of prize winning quality. The ex hibit included three kinds of pie pumpkins, on^ of which weighed 87 pounds 3 kinds of squashes, water melons, weighing up to 32 pounds, citrons, canteloupes, mjiskmelons, 4 fends of (beans* three varieties of corn, 3 kinds of cabbage, ahead of the Flat Dutch weighing 12 pounds. There were exhibits from Canada and sev eral of the counties of North Dakota yet the Training School won 28 first prizes1, 7 seconds and one third. Supt. Devine and his boys demon strated that they are real gardeners. The school won first on a Duroc Jer sey boar, second1 on its Holstein bull and two first on White Leghorn poul try. The school has farmed 155 acres the last three years ,and although there was but little rainfall, raised on an average of $11,000 worth of crop each year. Corn is the most profit able crop raised by the institution. The N. W. Red Dent and Gehu Flint are the varieties grown. The 38 acres of corn grown last year produc ed according to the local markets, a crop worth $2,985.00. This included 80 tons of ensilage, 20 bushels of seed corn, 150 bushels of snap corn for hogs and 14 tons of fodder. Fifty acres were grown this year and a like result obtained. Two acres of navy beans produced 16 bushels. There have been two cuttings of Sou dan grass, which grew 5 1/2 feet tall. One acre of sorghum was sowed and 8 tons of fodder were taken off. Its good feed. Sugar beets were tested out this year. They appear to be of good quality but a trifle large. Two Good Hunting Stories Rev. P. W. Erickson is a real hunt er and nobody dares dispute his claims out of respect for the cloth. While hunting last week, he brot down eleven ducks by firing seven shells. This recalls a hunting story told by Dudley L. Nash, prominent Minot lawyer. Mr. Nash does not hunt any more and he explained the reason to a friend in this fashion: "Years ago I was a practicing law yer at White Earth, N. D.f and went out after chickens. I took two boxes of shells along, 25 shells to the box. Hunting was good. There seemed to be chickens everywhere. When I got done shooting, I threw my birds in the buggy and drove back home. When I counted them, I found that with the 50 shells I had killed exactly sixty three chickens. I just concluded that that wasn't hunting, it ^as slaughter, so I threw my old gun afTfev and have n't done any hunting since." Miss Eldrice Nelson, music in structor in the Minot schools, spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives and friends at Carpio. LOST! A cheque book and two warrants for Ernerft Busch of Sawyer, N.
