NORMAL NEWS N6TES President L. H. Beeler delivered the Commencement address for the Deer ing public schools on the evening of May 19th. The regular meeting of the Y. W. 0. A. for May 17th was planned es pecially for the Senior Class who are also member of the Y. W. C. A. Each one present responded with a passage of scripture from memory and short talks were given by the Misses Ange line Jefferis, Elsie J. Cook and Hul dah L. Winsted, and Mrs. Florence C. Perkett. Miss Beulah Shurr was the Jeader of the meeting. Miss Leona Taylor attended the High School Conference at Grand Forks May 18th and 19th as the rep resentative of the Normal School. Miss Taylor was also a delegate to $he state convention of the Business and Professional Clubs at the same place. Drake and Minot High Schools) held a track meet at the Normal School on the afternoon of May 16th, The meet had of necessity been postponed because of the rains. Minot High School won first place. Members of the Y. W. C. A. sold candy and ice cream at the Track Meet and also at the Model School May Fete. The girls are raising money fco send a delegate to the Y. W. C. A. conference at Geneva the last of Aug ust. It is expected that at least one delegate will be sent. Cash Registers have been placed in •the Cafeteria and in the Normal Book Store. These greatly facilitate the handling of the funds as Miss Colton i:an testify. Mrs. Florence C. Perkett went to Donnybrook on Tuesday afternoon to serve as judge in the Oratorical Con test between the Donnybrook and .Bowbells High Schools. Each school was represented by four speakers. The Physical Education Department of the Normal School is planning a May Fete for the evening of May 31 .at 6:45 o'clock. They will present a pageant, The Triumph of Health. #ostumes all already completed, hav ing been made by the students under the direction of Miss Eleanor C. Bry son of the Home Economies Depart ment. Miss Lulu Potts, director of Physical Education is in charge of the Fete, which will be held on the cam pus. The public are invited. The members of Miss Angeline Jef feris' Advisory Group enjoyed a pic nic and supper together at Riverside Park on Thursday evening. Miss Lulu Potts of the Normal School is drilling the Seniors of the High School in their Class Play, "The Mon on the Box". Rev. T. F. Gullixson was the speaker at Assembly on Tuesday morning. He spoke appropriately to the spirit of May 17th, the Norwegian Independ ence Day. His theme dealt in part with the contributions of the Nor wegian people to civilization. The class in Scouting enjoyed a hike and supper on the evening of May 19th. They hiked to Puritan Springs where they prepared their meal in the open as true scouts. This class is taught by Miss Lulu Potts. The Misses Eva Eaton, Lois and De Maris Kelley, accompanied Miss Lucile Maier to her home as week end guests last week. The four young women assisted in a concert presented by the M. E. church at Rus sell to secure funds for equipping the church with a furnace. Mrs. Beelercwill also be present at the Com' mencement of Oxford College, of which she is a graduate and will visit her two sons iii Pennsylvania before her return. She. will be away about a month. The Model School held their May Fete £i the Campus last Friday after noon. Each grade participated in some part' of the program from the singing games by the first graders, and the Health Song by the Second Grade to the various Folk Dances of the intermediate and upper grades. The May Queen, Esther Wildgrube, who had been elected by the children, was crowned with fitting ceremonies. The three May poles were wound by groups of girls from all grades above the third. Following the May Fete, The Track Meet was held on the Ath letic Field. Here there were contests for awards in the Physical Efficiency Tests standardized by the Playground Association of America. Flipping of Coin Convicted Defendant Stanley, May 22.—An assault and battery case was tried in Justice court last Monday. The case was tried be-' fore a jury. It is reported the jury stood 6 for acquittal and 6 for con viction. It is said that some one pro posed to flip a coin and if heads turned up the defendant should be found not guilty. The coin unfortunately for John Doctor turned up tails and he was accordingly found guilty. He paid a fine and costs. Did your favorite goose lay you a golden egg? Ask and ye shall re ceive.
