TRIALS SHOW EARLY SEEDED ONIONS BEST .Onions seeded April 25 yielded 486 bushels an acre and onions seeded May 6 yielded 234 bushels an acre, while onions seeded May 26 yielded only 138 bushels an acre, according to A. F. Yeager, horticulturist at the North Dakota Agricultural College who has just completed a number of dates of seeding trials. I Many different varieties were used in the seeding trials but the figures given above are for the Southport yellow globe, one of the best varieties for North Dakota. "Besides these trials to determine the best date of seeding, we conduct ed trials to determine which variety1 is best for North Dakota. Out of the 25 varieties used, we found that the Southports, either red, white or yel low, are the best, with Red Wethers field, Yellow Denvers, and Silverskin •Second best", said Mr. Yeager. Most onions are grown in the field directly from seed but there are some high yielding southern kinds which must be started in a hot bed and set out in the field. Giant Gibralters yielded 1304 bushels an acre on the experimental farm this year, accord ing to Mr. Yeager. "Questions are often asked as to which keeps better, a red, white, or yellow onion. Our trials show no effect of color on storage, but we find that round onions keep much better than the flat type." "Onions do well year after year on the same ground and this method is practiced by onion growers because weeds are an important factor in the cost of production of onions and once a piece of land is free of weeds it is valuable for onion raising. L. Bolley, state seed commissioner and originator of wilt resistant flax. "The pure seed laboratory at the present time is receiving many calls for will resistant flax seed, improved or registered seed wheat, othejr cer eals and grasses," declares Mr. Bolley. "It Is a function of the pure seed laboratory to analyze and test seeds and report upon their contents. We also register, certify and list seeds, and send a list containing the names and addresses of the growers to those who wish to buy. This tends to get good seed sowed on the land. Those who wish this work done should com municate at once with the State Seed Commissioner, Agricultural College, North Dakota. Please forward a fair, representative sample of that which is held for sale, and give the facts necessary to the listing." AGENTS HELP FARMERS TO SE CURE LABORERS County agents in 25 counties of North Dakota placed a total of 7,235 laborers with farmers for harvesting and threshing this year, according to figures received at the State Exten sion office. Estimates of farmers are that they saved 50 cents per day in wages paid to these men and that the total sav ing through work done by the coun ty agents in securing these men would exceed $100,000. The average harvest wage paid in the 25 counties was $3.37 per day, and the average wage for threshing was $4.33. In most localities laborers were paid by the day and in a few by the hour. It is cer tain that the price will be higher a year from now. The farmer who has an abundance of feed ought to make good money buying up a few head of these cheap cattle and carrying them over. In fact, many are doing this very thing. Julerjohn, the Glenburn barber, has an eye out for business. He saved one razor from the recent fire, which destroyed seven buildings at Glen burn and before his knife was cold, had established new quarters and shaved a customer.
