The Griggs Courier. R. TRUBSHAW, EDITOR. C. L. Allen has sold the Hope Pioneer to Prof. H. L. Moody, of Hope. President McKinley's popular majority is H77.00G. the largest 'ever received by a presidential candidate. There was a big fall ing off nl' dHiii:ci'i:ilk' majority in the sow iiern slates, and in a few years the "solkl south'' 'will be a thing of he past. WelikeBro. The movement to secure the admission of Oklahoma and the Indian Territory as one state will secure the favor of the country. The present population of Okla homa is 396.245. That of the Indian Territory is 391,960. The combined population of the two territories is over 788,000. Their voting population is more than 125,000. They would be entitled to send four members to the popular branch of Congress under the 200,000 ratio, or there abouts, which is it be adopted by congress for representation in the House of representatives and the electoral college for the next ten years. The St. Louis Globe Democrat suggests that the new state be called the state of Jeffer son. The Buffalo Express was re cently burned out but the inde fatigable editor didn't let that worry him and the "old rag 'o freedom" came out on time. It is impossible to keep a good man down, and the Express rises from the ashes better than ever. Now if Editor Towne's (no re lation of the famous Charley, the pee-wee) delinquent subscriber would drop in and pay up all arre arages to help the thing along, it would be a good act. Try it. The death of United States Senator Cushman K. Davis, of Minnesota, has removed one of the brainiest men of the whole country and a man who could be spared less than almost any other man in public life at this time. He was one of the great est constitutional lawyers in the country and had served with dis tinction in drawing up the Paris treaty with Spain His know ledge and counsel on the floor of the senate was much needed at this coming session of congress, as he thoroughly understood all the details of the prominent legislation touching the Philip pines that is likely to come up. He was certainly the ablest man who ever represented the great state of Minnesota, and without reflecting on the capacity of any body, we hazard the opinion that his place will not be filled in years. According to the late census Griggs county has nearly doubled in population since 1890 at which time the population of the county was 2.817. vJur popu lation under the 1900 census is 4,744. a gain of 1,927. Henry Detwill/r. passed away at his homq sflven miles north of Cooperstov,^/ Fri day night. Mr. Detwiller has alyays enjoyed exceptionally good health and hence his death was a complete surprise to all. During the day he seemed in usual spirit and vitality and re tired at about the usual time ap parently in excellent health. About, midnight Mrs. Detwiller heard him utter one groan and at once tried to arouse him to learn the cause but in vain. No other sound escaped him neither was there any movement of body. He had already expired. As sistance was immediately sum moned, nothing could be done. Without a strugglehe passed be yond, his face wearing the quiet look of sleep. Heart failure was pronounced the cause of death. Mr. Detwiller was a native of Canada, having been born in Ful ler ton township, Ontario in 1841. He there married Miss Matilda Moore who with five sons and one daughter survive him. He came to N. D., in 1882 and took up as a claim the present home stead. In the spring of 1880 he came back with his family and has lived in Griggs county ever since and has here by dint of toil risen from very limited to easy circumstances. The decease was brought up under Presbyterian training from childhood. At the time of death he was a member of the Cooper.stown Congregational church with which he was identi fied as a prominent, active and persistent worker. His presence and influence here especially in country work, will be sadly missed and his loss most deplored by those who know him best. Quiet, unostentatious, in dustrious. patient, persevering, even tempered and of staunch integrity his influence was ever felt on the side he believed to be right. His death will be recog nized as a real loss to the com munity as well its to relatives and friends. Funeral seavices were held in the Congregational church Mon day at 12 o'clock and were at tended by large concourse of sympathzing friends from both county andtown. The sudden shock completely prostrated Mrs. Detwiller and for a time here life was dispaired of. Spasm followed spasm in rapid succession. The chance of recovery are however increasing and it is hoped that she will soon be out of danger. The Courier and friends everywhere tender the family and relatives sincer est sympathy in this hour of severe trial and great loss. Lost, Many have lost contidence and hope as well as health, because they have been told their Kidney disease was incurable Foley's Kidney Cure is a guaranteed remedy for the discouraged discon solate. The Ira R. Hicks 1901 Almanac. Whatever may be said of the scientific cause upon which the Rev. Ira R. Hicks bases his yearly forecasts of storm and weather, it is a remarkable fact that specific warnings of every great storm, tlood, cold wave and drouth, have been plainly printed in his now famous Almanac for many years. The latest start ling proof of this fact was the de struction of Galveston, Texas, on the very day named by Prof. Hicks in his 1900 Almanac, as one of disaster by storm along the gulf coasts. The 1901 Almanac, by far the finest, most complete and beautiful yet published, is now ready. This remarkable book of near two hundred pages, splendidly illustrated with charts and half-tone engravings, goes as a premium to every subscrib er who pays one dollar a year for Prof. Hicks' journal.
