The crime of suicide appears to be upon the increase. Whether it is actually so, or whether the appearance is given by the greater assiduity of gentlemen in the newspaper business, catering for a real or supposed unwholesome popular appetite, it is diffioult to determine. We hear oft ener now than in former times of cases of self-destruction. Men, women and chil dren, with or without known inducement, take their leave of sublunary things, and by their own aots enter, unannounced, the mysterious vestibule of another state braving all the consequences which are thought to follow what has been fre quently pronounced a crime of the great est magnitude. Disappointments in busi ness, family difficulties, the effects of sensual indulgence, loss of lovers, and a variety of other troubles by no means ir remediable, supply annually, in hundreds of cases, all the motive that is- necessary for the purpose; and the halter, poison, villainous saltpeter, or extreme hydro pathy, closes the account It is probable that very few persons in a, strictly normal condition of health and intellect ever take their own lives. There are divers unpleasant incidents, and possi ble sensations, hanging around the act, which, to persons of sound mind, give it an undesirable appearance to say nothing of the problematical experiences of that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler has been known to return. In general we may, if we choose to be char itable, and to leave to the Almighty the business of dealing damnation, indulge a rational doubt whether, in all cases, the suicide is the great criminal which he is Bet down to be; and be permitted to hope that, in the great day of account, his frail ties, his sufferings, his delusions, and his temptations will be taken into considera tion, by one whose eyes penetrate deeper than ours, and whose wisdom is fully ade quate to a just estimate of all the pallia ting circumstances. As a general rule, the life and servioes of every human being are due, for their entire natural term, to his fellow creatures; and by his own act, he has no right to circumscribe that term of service: neither has he the right, at any time, to assume that he is no longer useful, and may, therefore, without offense retire. How great a crime against society is com mitted by an act of self-destruction is to be estimated by the loss of service which will accrue as the consequence, and the damage which attends an evil examplo ; these being, so far as appears, the sole elements of the computation. Of the sin against Qod and its magnitude, we know little beyond what we are able to judge through our imperfect conceptions of his character and government Neither bave we a general consciousness of mankind upon the subject to which to appeal some whole nations - hav ing holden the practice to be allowa ble. That an act of suicide, however, by one in the full possession and equilibrium of his mental faculties if suoh a thing is possible would be a sin against the highest law of the universe, there is little room to doubt . Immm The Opera closed a brilliant season last night, with by no means their best piece, an 4 a louse of the poorest. Parodl's continued indisposition prevented her doing Justice to hea-self. TBI auditories on the three Giovanni Nights bnve gone diminuendo, and with a reversed in erease the Teutonio element prevailing which laat faot is but natural, and in many reepoots praiseworthy. Nationality is as strong in music as in many other things, and the leading article of a Gor man's musical faith is the supremacy of German musio in general, and the supereminence of Don Giovanni in particular. He promulgates his creed, as of erst was the Koran, "Believe or die" musically, of course, now-a-days. Take, as a slight exponent, the announce ment of Messrs. Strakosch and Grau, of Mo tart't Immortal Don Giovanni, the Qreatctt of all Operas. Now this rather strong state ment, although essentially true sixty years ago, bos long oeased to be so. The soientifio and literary world has not stood still, nor has the musical. Don Giovanni, at the period of its produc tion, was so immeasurably in advance of all then existing operas, that it created an epoch 1 Germany was in a blaze of enthusiasm, and, from that day to the present, no vestal fire has euer been more devotedly fed. The fall of tl irones, the crash of kingdoms, the thunder of Austerliti; and Jena could not drown the alle li tiah of the Qiovanni-ites. 1800 repeated what 1790 had said, and 1859 still hymns the same O' Je. A Don Giovanni literature has been orea hid by the aggregation of panegyrics, criti cisms, elucidations, and esthetio lucubrations, celebrating greatly the seen and heard, and sUill more the bidden and inaudible beauties of it. Dante in Italy, Goethe at borne, had no more devoted, nor more numerous commentators Tbis is all very well, and very patriotic The same was done elsewhere for Handel and his dreary platitudes, which are yet listened to fine mugio by bold and bluff Britons, who hav ing no musician of their own, took one, as they took their king, from Hanover. We repeat, this is all very well, for national pride, under aov circumstances, is so amiable a weakness that w confess to having many a time smoth ered oar sens of the beautiful with a spread eagle bAanket, in listening with apparent oom posurs to that "dread anthem," Hail Columbia, which, Dyles declares, has been inflicted upon us for oar sins. By dint of ceaseless repetition, Don Giovanni is still belveved in; witness the orowds who ea gerly rushed to its first representation here, and who left, wondering what the pother was about. ' Nevertheless, people have a way of thinking for themselves, and Don Giovanni has only drawn large booses in this country, under conditions of an innooent community, and extensive flourish of trumpets. Such delusions, it is true, are more practicable in some places than in others. Thus in Boston, they of late, in eold blood, drew down upon themselves the plagues of lioe, frogs, and other mastodons musioal, by perpetrating those frightful fugues known to musical antiquaries as Handel's "Is rael in Egypt." Here is an admirable fitness of things though, for there (Boston or Egypt take your choice) prevaOs the opinion, that highest style of musio is the Oratorlol Poeti- oal justice, decidedly! We regret that time and space fail us to say something more, snore seriously, on tbis subjeot. That Giovanni possesses great beauties, it were absurd to deny; v only object to the everlasting ditionary chatter on the subject. To be that an Opera is the greatest of all Operas, which is disgusting in plot and detail from to end, which has not a single chorus wortbv of the name, whose melodies are melodies, but suggestions of melodies, whose orchestration is, to a modern ear, and ineffective; all tbis is not oonduoive to tiencel Motart can not be made justly amenable the plot and the libretto, eiojpt as particep$ criminu. It is hardly necessary to say thing on that bead, except to advise our coun try cousins, who are in blissful ignorance the animal nnder the elassio white meal, "the greatest of all operas" is absurd and illog ical opening with the climax of a disgusting murder, and running in a broad current of revolting indecency that Traviata, which of oar squeamish friends will by no means erate, is, in comparison, a very evangel purity. Charades. A charade to the following fect is going the rounds : My first is a dropper J My second is a propper, and My whole is a whopper Fall-staff. This is certainly effeotive, but the following, which it reminds me of, I think, surpasses My first is a support ; My second is a support) My whole is a support Foot-stool. The Ingenuity of this last consists in three different articles of support, and ths terest in it is, that it Uses ordinary skill guessing for the result, whioh must be obtained in an unusual manner. HOME INTERESTS. as an the and Don told be ginning not and thin pa for any of that such some tol of ef it the in in i Ladd, Wehster and Company's Sew- mo M-achinss. We paid a visit, yesterday, ths agency of Ladd, wkbstks 4 Co., ... v i CI V over Beggs & Bmltn s jeweirj uwnp West Fourth street, where we were s'lftwn by Mr. G. C. Knim, the agent or tno nrm, several elegant machines, with epeolmeni.of the sewing performed by their Instrumentality. The pleasure of the visit was not a little enhanced by witnessing the operation of sewing, under the controlling skill of that most useful and exquisite of all inventions a young Lady. In conversing with Mr. Xkikfin, we took occasion to ask him what he claimed on behalf r the machines of LAnn, Wsbstss A Co., htch was not possessed by the machines of other manufacturers, or if possessed by them, not to the same extent. He ot once pointed ns to a row of the machines, saying, We claim for them, in the first place, that they are far handsomer than those of other makers. If "a thing of beauty is a joy for ever," then Ladd, Wsbstss A Co.'s Maohines must be a cause or joy to every family which welcomes them to their oirole. He claimed for them, secondly, that they were pre-eminently "Family Sswiso Ma- cbinks." Whatever otner runners may oiaim for their productions as manufacturing ma chines, Ladd, Webstsb A Co. have the glory of being the firm of all others which provides maohines specially adapted to family use. Mr. Kniffin, moreovor, said that Ladd, Wkbstkr A Co.'s Machines make what is called the Lock-stitch, to perfection; that they are celebrated for the evenness and regularity of the work they perform, and that It is impossi ble to rip or pull out the stitches short of cutting or violently rending the thread. And he added that it was quite an easy matter to manage them; for being constructed on the " Cam movement principle," they were noces- sarily as siuiplo-jvs they were perfect. Mr. Kniffin showed us several letters received by him from parties who had purohased machines of Ladd, Webster Ic Co.'s manufac ture, the contents of which were highly satis factory. A few extracts will be read with interest : The Rev.W. B. Browne,of Paris,Ky., writing under date April 12, 1859, says: "I have no hesitation in saying that the Sewing Machine I purchased of you last Fall has proved satis factory in every respect. Having minutely examined several of the other machines that are most in use, I am perfectly satisfied of the superiority of this in respect of simplicity, durability, and easiness of management. I have shown its construction and principle of operation to several of my acquaintances, who have some knowledge of mechanics and machinery, and it has immediately commended itself to them as being all thatoould be desired in a Sewing Machine. Without any desire to disparage other machines several of which are far from being failures J. am clearly of opinion that this has advantages over them all, is free from many of their important defects, and will do work that can not be equaled by any of them that I have seen. No lady can regret an acquaintance with it, or fail to be satisfied with it upon a fair trial." Mrs. Roxana Kitchen, of No. 84 Broadway, Cincinnati, bears witness as follows : "April 9, 1859. After two years' experience in the use of Hunt, (now Ladd,) Webster A Co.'s Sewing Machines, I have decided to purchase two more for my business, that of quilting ooat facings. For regularity of stitch, they are superior to Singer's, one of which I had used one year previous to purchasing yours; and they run much lighter, and are easier managed, I cheerfully recommend them to all in need a good Sewing maohine." Mrs. Jane McCusker, of this city, says: "The Hunt, (now Ladd,) Webster A Co.'s Machine, purchased from Mr. G. C. Kniffin, has been used on all kinds of family work, and gives perfeot satisfaction." Mr. A. V. Thompson, of 79 Third street, Cincinnati, writes thus: "I have used Messrs. Hunt, (now Ladd) Webster A Co.'s Sewing Machine upon every thickness of cloth common to a general shop, and have no hesitation recommending It to the trade as a maohine well dapted to their use. The stitch uniform both sides of the fabrio is more perfect than that made by the Singer machine, and machine less liable to get out of order." Mr. Edward Hurd, of No. 11 East Fourth street, Cincinnati, adds bis te stiinony: "The Hunt, ( now Ladd, ) Webster A Co's. Machine, purohased from you, (Mr. 0. Kniffin,) gives perfect satisfaction; and after using it for all kinds of family sewing, eight months, I would not exchange it for any other in the market." There are fifty of these machines in use dress-making establishments in this employed in sewing all kinds of material, excepting the finest lawn or barege. operators say, as we are informed, that machines never "pucker" or "draw," an from which other Machines are not quite free. These elegant Machines are made at one the best Machine Shops in Boston, Massachu setts; and for the last two years they havo umphantly carried off the prizes awarded the best Sewing Machines, by the Judges the Worcester (Mass.) Mechanics' Fair, the Massachusetts Stato Fair. Finally, the price bas lately been reduced from $100 to $76 each. Musgrave's Qua Cooking Stoves. . iinn hi far as of . Sal jfiT 1 1 A stove, hosted by a gas burner, that will serve all the ordinary purposes of a oook stove, is, espeoially In summer, a great desideratum. It is economical, oonveniout, and expeditious in its operations. Dr. Musoravs, 272 West Sixth street, has invented, and manufactures for this market, a Gas Cooking Stove, which, after thorough trial by many of our oitizens, has been pronounced to be a most valuable inven tion. The stove complete, only oocupies about one cublo foot of space, and is so constructed that by a proper adjustment of the flame, by means of the movable bracket and gauze burner, it may be made to effeotually perform all the functions of an ordinary stove. A con centrated flame, or center burner, is used in the operations of boiling, frying, ironing, etc, and a distributed heating surface is used in every variety of cooking where it is wished to sur round the article with heat, suoh as baking, roasting, etc. A single stove will do every variety of cooking; but additional stoves, of different sizes and patterns, may be arranged together on a stand, not unlike a common bureau. This is one of the most novel and valuable inventions for city residents that we have ever examined, and having witnessed the whole operation of cooking a regular dinnor, including roost meats, bread, vegetables and pastry, and having partaken of the same, we are prepared to say that we believe no stove can be made to do its work quicker, or more satisfactory. This apparatus needs to be seen to be thoroughly understood, and the inventor would be pleased to have gentlemen and ladies call at his residence, as above, where he will exhibit bis Stoves and explain them. The cost for gas is only 214 conts per day for each person. Upholstery and House-Furnishing. Upholstery in the City and Upholstery in the Country, although similar in their results, are widely different in the means employed for con ducting the business. The latter is fundamen tal purely, and partakes not in the operations of commerce. The diligent house-wife feeds, waters, and picks ber own geese, sews her bed ticks by hand, and eushions ber own "old arm chair," and the lovely marriageable daughter may, perhaps, be busily engaged in making sheets, etc., for two; but in the- City there more system, and less of the primitive. Tick' ing, Cotton, Feathers, Hair, Moss, and other materials are purchased in large quantities one time and worked up in a wholesale way. We were much interested yesterday, in look ing through the establishment of Mr. Adah Geib, No. 67 Fifth street, between Walnut and Vine. He manufactures, and sells at whole sale and retail, Feather-beds, Pillows, Comforts, Quilts, Cushions, etc, and pays particular to Spring and Curled-hair Mattresses. This establishment was first started about fifteen years ago, and has been saccessfully carried on since that time. Mr. Ueis now employs constantly from sixteen to twenty hands, turns out yearly from $25,000 to $30,000 worth of goods In his line, whioh are sold in the at retail, and shipped in wholesale lots to South and West. He takes jobs of furnishing the Upholstery work of Hotels, Dwellings, Steamboats, and there is scarcely any thing his line that can not be found constantly hand at bis establishment.
