The offices of eleven Judges in Massnchn-
etts will be vacated by a rcoont act of the
Legislature, after the 10th of May oozt.
By a recent law of lows, paper maturing on
Sunday, or a holiday, in that State, it due and
payalle on tho succeeding day.
Senator Seward is making preparations for a
voyage to Europe. He will be absent until
late in the fall.
Bishop Doano, of Now Jersey, died at his
residence In Burlington on Wednesday. His
age was sixty.
Coal has been found in I"ne and Buckeye
Valleys, El Dorado County, California, the bed
being from twelve to fifteen feet in thickness.
Two of the Oberlin rescuers have been dis
charged, because of an informality in tho in
diotment as to their nimei.
The Hon. John Sherman and wife, of Mans
field, sailed from New York for Liverpool on
Saturday. Mr. S. will make the tour of Eu
rope. At Miamisvillo, Ohio, on Friday last, Be
linda Buckingham, a girl thirteen year) of
ago, took arsenic on her way from Bchool, and
was found dead in the road.
Mr. Robert Kir.nicutt, an ardunt young
naturalist, loft Chicago on Monday, and en
tered on a journey overland to the polar sea.
He expects to return in 1861.

In the libel suit brought by Father Chiniquy
against Fathor Trench, in the Kinkakee (111.)

The Paris Siccle suggests the propriety of an

The steamer Eolian, from St. Louis, bound
to St. Paul, Minnesota, sunk in Lake Pepin
last Friday. Four persons, whose names are
unknown, were drowned.
The war contiues between Ecuador and Peru,
and the blockade of Guayaquil is so strictly
kept up that the trado of that port is totally
destroyed.
A son of Ex-Secretary Gilmer, of Tyler's
Cabinet, committed suicide on Monday, by
throwing himself under the wheels of a loco
motive, at the Washington Depot.
Michael Pbelan, the champion billiard
player, was honored by a serenade in New
York, on Wednesday night, from tome of his
friends and admirers.
The Judnoo girl, whose elopement from Pon

considerable talk, is now in Canada living with
him, having again deserted her home and
frienda.

The Sheriff of Lorain County, 0., Is watch
ing Messrs. Jennings and Mitchell, the wit
nesses againct the Oberliners, to nab them on
a charge of kidnapping. They keep themselves
close under the care of the Federal officers.

Chicago, through whose exertions a public
meeting of colored citizens met on Jlondav
evening, and passed resolutions in favor of

The loss of life by the explosion of tbe
steamboat St. Nicholas, as far as ascertained,
amounts to fifty twenty-seven cabin passen
gers and twenty-three deck-passengers. Sev

At a late meeting of the Society of Antiqua
rians iu England, the Hon. Robert Charles
Winthrop, President of the Massachusetts His
torical Society, was elected an Honorary Fel
low. The New York Tribune says:
The bill whioh restored corporeal punish
ments in tbe government of our State Prisons,
was killed in tbe Senate. So, cruel Inflictions
are still forbidden in the prisons of New York.
Tke Louisville Democrat declares that Lou
isville is in tbe midst of a general rush of pros
perity. On every side we have abundant evi
dences of thrift, and all tbe material interests
of the oity are advancing rapidly.
The Hon. Nathan Dayton, formerly Judge
of tbe Eighth Judicial District, New York,
died suddenly of apoplexy, at his residence in
Luckport, N. Y., on Tuesday morning, while
in the act of dressing. His age was sixty-four
years.
The Canadian oents, which hive been lately
thrown off at the British Mint, possess a re
markable peculiarity. They are not only to
kens of value, but also standards of weight and
measure. One hundred oents weigh exactly
one pound, and one cent measures one inch.

celebrated the anniversary of the patron

A writer from Pike's Peak says : This is

A wind wagon has been constructed by
Mr. Thomas, for use in crossing the Kansas
plain.. This reminds us of the kite carriages
of Dr. Pococke of Bristol, England, some fifteen
or sixteen years ago, and wonder if the former
will prove as grout a failure as the latter.
A doctor Keyser, of Pittsburg, professes to
havo discovered A substitute for those who use
tobacco, and who wish to abandon it. The
tobacco disease, as we all know, has a wonder
ful hold on some persons, and no doubt, in
many instances, to the great injury of their

Tho Supreme Court at Cleveland, on Thurs
day morning, rondered its decision in the mat
ter of the application for a writ of hubu atrpm,
to bring up Bushnell and he Oberlin rescuers,
now in custody of tbe United States oflioers.
The Court unanimously declined to interfere,
refusing to allow tbe writ.
Xuthnniel J. Bird, alias Dr. Hunter, con
victed in October, 1H53, at the Camden Comity
(X. J.) Court, of tho crime of bigamy, and
sentenced to ten years' imprisonment, was
liberated from tho Stute prison on Monday
lust, having been pardoned bv tho Court of
Pardons in November last. Bird's cam ox
cited m m il interest at tbe lime of trial.
Tbe great Water Celebration at Brooklyn,
N. V., came off on Wednesday. The day was
ushored in by the firing of cannon and the ringing
of bells j next a grand procession of the
military, firemen, elvic associations, and trades
men an oration delivered, and an original
ode sung, and the proceedings finally wound
up with a magnificent display of fireworks and
a general illumination. Snob was tbe joy at

The corner stone of a new Oddfellows Hall
was laid, with circumstances of pomp and show,
at Wheeling, Va., on Tuesday lost.
A large trade exists between Lns Angeles,
in California, and Utah. In January sixty
wagons loaded with goods, valued at about

city, have purchased the exclusive right to
build all the passenger railroads that may be
required in Baltimore.
The Dotroit Advertiser says that tha balls

Mrs. Anson G. Phelps, the well-known friend
of the poor, died on Sunday, at hor residenoe

renowned for her charities, and her death will
be sinoorely lamented by all good hearts.
The Maysvillo Eagle reports that considera
ble damage has been done above Abordeen,0.,
by the hill-slido slipping. On the Old Stato
Road several sores have given way and slid
down, filling the road up entirely with trees,
rocks, etc., to the depth of ten or twelve feet.
Mr. John Savage, who figured in the Irish
troubles of 1848, and who was recontly con
nected editorially with the States newspaper at
Washington, bas been appointed Seorotury of
Legation to Now Grenada, and will aooumpany
Mr, George Washington Jones to that coun
try toon.
The Albany Times charges cortain lobby
mon with causing the death of the late Son
ator Doherty tuoy "poisoned him with
liquor," "deliberately, systematically mur
dered him," for the furtherance of thoir own
views with roforenco to the Albany Bridge
Bill.
Mr. Atherton, tha Teller of the Southern
Bank, St. Louis, has not only oonfessod to the
embezzlement of $53,000, but has told what he
has done with the money. He says ha had
loaned it, or the greater part of it, $47,000, to
Raynor i Co., of that city, of which firm bia
brother-in-law is a member.
It is said that tbe evidence against the Rev.
Mr. Hardin, of N. J., now in jail on a charge
of wifo-poisoning, is entirely circumstantial,
but very strong. The druggist of whom he
purchased the arsenio, in Easton, recognized
his Daguerreotype at onoe among a dozen oth
ers shown him at the same time.
The New York Herald of tbe 27th says: John
Wilson, for tbe murdor of Patrick McCarthy,
will be executed to-day in Albany. Ho was to
have been hung on the same gallows with Mrs.
Hartung, but as there has been a stay of pro
ceedings in ber oaso, Wilson will have no com
pany on the scaffold.

Tho Weather yesterday was warm and cloudy, with

tinues to swell slowly ; It Is now within four fuet uf
the big rise, a few mouths slnco. Our dispatches
from Pittsburg show tlmt the river is falling, with
19 feet wator In tho channel.
Business on the Levee was moderately active; but in
consequence of the crowded stnte of tho Levee,
boats had great difficulty iu loading and unloading
their cargoes.

The Sir W. Wallace arrived from Pittsburg with a
full cargo for St. Louis, for which port she left last
evening. The Swallow came in from Parkersburg
with a fair cargo. The J. H. Done passed up from
St. Louis for Pittsburg with a full cargo. The Courier
for Wheeling bad a paying trip. The Monorch left
for New Orleans and the Lehigh for St. Louis, both
loaded deep. The Baltic arrivedat New Orleans from
LouiKville, and the Diana departed on the 271 h. The
Messenger, Iowa, Bay City aud Arkanaaw Traveller
are due hore, and will doubtlois be found in
port this morning.
GLEANINGS FROM OUR EXCHANGES.
Louisville. The Courlor of yesterday has the

lor a wonder, with the hopo that it will be dry to
day. The water has risen to within cichteen luchosof the
flooring on tha Third street bridge, with a prospect
that it will be on tho bridge to-day. The houses
along the lower wharf are threatened, but we think
the night of the freshet will be attained to-nny.wlih
no icais of an overflow. The weight of the rise yes
terday was evidently from the Kentucky Klvor, which
waa very much swollen, and we learn by a traveler,
who arrived from Frankfort yesterday on the cars,
that the Kentucky ttivcr at (Jogar's Landing the night
previous had risen eeven feet. That is a point some
distance above Frankfort.
From the officers of the Pacific, from New Orleans,
the last arrival, we learn that the flood Iu the Lower
Mississippi had somewhat abated, though It was still
rising a little at New Orleans and along the coast.
Along up to Napoleon the river was at a stand, and
from that point to Cairo it waa falling slowly.
Cant. Jerry Diller, tho former incumbent, was tri
umphantly elucted wharf master last night, to serve
anot her year. lie is an atteutivo, courteous officer.
Lower Mississippi. From our Now Orlcuno ex
changes we clip the following interesting Items :
Mcbder on a B-'AT. Wt learn from our New
Orleans exchanges, that a murder was committed on
a stern-wheel boat called the Telegram, no Red Klver.
Thursday week. Tbe steward Wesley Harris, a free
negro, killed a white man, a waiter of the name of
John. The passengers of the boat arrested Harris.
The following was tho report of the Coroner :
"The testimony fixed the homicide upon Harris,
and showed the unconcern of Capt. Denalow iu the
matter. The post mortem clearly assigned death to
the blows on the head. Tiie Coroner's jury jrave for
their verdict, that tho deceased, who was a white
man about twenty-five years old, his nationidlty un
known, anil his only known name John, came to his
death by theeaid blows on his head, inflicted by the
said Wesley Harris, f. in. c, with Capt. Denslow as
an accessory after the fact."
The Coronor at once had the Captain arrested ; but
he was soon released, under ball of 8l,&OU.
Our New Orleans exchanges report a risolu Uppor
Red River. The Hope and Ham Howell were above
the shoals. The latter packot has seven hundred
bales as her cargo, at 97 a bale.
The Vlcksuiirg Whig, of Saturday, says the river
wa rising at the rata of one Inch and a quarter in
twenty-four hourax at that point. It was sixteen
Inches above the high water mark uf I860, and niue
