Thrirdl. ' Ifelected to the tate Conven

immediate isecesion of Loucisina from the
Uni.n I" I answer, I WILL. nor.
As I have employed but few monosyl
shies to sanwer your questions, I shall
take this occsion in as brief a manner as
I am able to do, to make known to your
selves ind the pohlio generally, what
weald he msy seare of eetion, should the
people se proper to choose me e one of
their repreentatives.
I am in fkvor of maintainlar thi Union,
if it can be done con*istntly with honor
end justles to the Sooth. I am profound
ly sensible of the wrongs and great injne
ties that have been done t. that ijrtion
of the Country of which I am a native;
hot eten under a sense oft ross wrong,
andl agrant violation of our rights, I am
not prepared, and hope I never ebhall he,
to abandon thi Union ustal every honor
able and proper eandient for redres,
within it, shall have heen rtied In vain.
The mesan by which thee ends are to he
attained, appear to me to be ny the force
of rem-on, by moderation, by the progree
of Palm, enlightened opinion, and by the
steady, intelligent and firm maintainance
of our rights. Done our Mielity to the
Union require no more of us than to enjoy
its hilesingi whilst all is bright and prin
perous and whilst the Constitution anti
Laws are alike respeted in all sections of
the country, and are we at liberty to haban
don it in the hour of peril 1 I hope ant;
at leant, I, for one, am reedy to eahaust
all means of redress for our wroepg, rather
than give up so glorious a heritage.
I am as fur from entertaining a thought
of submission to the wrongs of the North,
as any ma In the State or t;e South; but
as to the means to be employed to redresm
those wrongs. I materially differ with
some of my fiends. Immediate secession
is not, in my hnmble judgment, the action
wheich the people of the State shoold adopt
for redress, but a calm, Intelligent, Arm
and patrinole stand ebhold he taken to m*
care forever our Constitutional rights and
the respected and peaceful enjoyment of
them. Tis., I hope, may yet he a.oom
plIshed, in the Union; and if not, none
will more heartily agre, none will mo*e
firmly adveate, and none will, with great
er alaerity, he ready to pledge all he has
and all be is, than I, to the formation of a
United Soothern Confederacy.
Should I be chosen a one of the mem
hern of the Convention, I shall steadfaetiy
and with all the humble ability I posseas,
advrcate and vote for any propoeition bhay.
Ing for it: object a Boutbhern Converntina
and the joint action of all the slave hoall
•g State, and throughl that Convention,
the unwavering vindieation and assurance
/f our rights within the Union ; sad failling
in this, then for the aimultneon with.b
