j NEW STEAMSHIP LINE
For some time the PILOT has been
j in receipt of information relative to
I the establishing of a new steairship
i line with one terminus at Panama i
i City but for business reasons could
I not make the facts public I
I The purchase of the Manteo by I
I President Steele of the A fi St A B i
R R + and his announcement that it I
would be run in connection with the II
road renders the further withholding
f
i from the publi of the facts unneces
sary J
I It has alwaysbe lithe intention of
I the railway company to secure steam
ship connection at this point for all
j Gulf ports Cuba and Central Amen
i can points Its plans for securing
I such transportatu < M are as extensive
j as the business om t e Lower South i
j and its foreign and ooastways trade I
demands
I
I The road was not lUilt merely as a
t means of reaching Std Andrews Bay
from the interior but to furnish the
I most direct and best means of trans
j portation from all points in Alabama
Georgia and West jioricla that are
tributary to it to and froin all points
reached by water I
The purchase of the Manteo is one
step in that direction As trade de
velops other boats will be put in ser
vice and this port will become what
i
nature intended it to be the principle
metropolis of the Eastern Gulf
i
The Manteo will make close con
nection with and have direct traffic I
relations with the Mallory Line of
steamships which will enable this
section and the extensive territory
tributary to the Atlanta St Andrews i
i
Bay R R to enjoy as prompt and
cheap transportation ass now had
by any point on the Gulf of Mexico

i MR EDITOR
i As will be noted from the attached
letters my efforts in behalf of the
01
East Bay Canal seem to be apprecia
ted which causes me to explain why
in my opinion all of St Andrews Bay
I and the territory to the westward
thereof should and would be interest
ed in this project As a preface I
would ask attention to Mr Merrits
letter below
West Bay Fin Sepf2nd ZOOS
DKAR MADAM
Please accept my thanks and con
gratulations for your wise and in
spiring letter in a receet issue of the
Panama City Pilot If those interest
ed will cooperate the canal from
East Bay to the Apalachicola river
will be built This will quickly draw
the attention and funds of the United
States for canal extension I suggest
you have papers of other cities publish
this article and others you may
write Keep the matter prominent
Yours very truly
W B MEKRIT
Mr Merrit strikes the key note of
my explanation He realizes that the
best way to gain favor with Uncle
Sam and get him to spend money is
to show a willingness to do something
yourself He also realizes that the
East Bay canal is important is of
such n short length and light cutting
with a large wealthy territory to back
it and the proposed extension
through from West Bay to Choctaw
hatchee Bay so much longer and the
country weaker financially that he
urges as an important step the build
ing of the East Bay canal by private
subscription as that will tend to cause
the U S to furnish the means and
begin the work on the extension

Miss LILLIAN CARLISLE

Your favor of the 29th ult with en
closures received I had read with
much interest your letter in the Pilot
and had thought of writing you about
it I appreciate your practical sug
gestions and active interest in this
public improvement I will deliver
your letter as requested and will
endeavor to aid you in any man
ner you may suggest
Yours sincerely
W 11 MILTON
It is gratifying to receive such cor
dial support to the project as has thus
far been extended and it shows that
it will have the support of the entire
Bay country as well af the river
towns and with the completion of
this project the latter towns will
heartilj cooperate with the West
Bay interests in securing the cutting
of the canal in that territory bv the
government
Thus far there has nothing been
received that is at all discouraging
in fact quite the contrary and a much
larger interest disclosed in the Canal
than was to be expected
Miss LILLIAN CARLISLE
Mail Service
Our mail service has been excellent
this past week and every one here is
greatly pleased at the change There
should however be some changes
made in the Bay service so that near i
by points could get their mail soon I
after its arrival here If as soon as
it was received the East Bay mail
could be sent on toMillville Croman
ton and Parker remaining there
over nr > St Andrew mail
b < forvdidt here at once the
North Bay mail remaining at Si An
drew over night and going on early
in the morning and both the East
and North Bay mail returning in the
afternoon in time to forward the days
mail from all points about the bay
from here at 5 p m it would make
the mail service here all that could
be desired and would not affect the
water ix4 03 disastrously in any way
on the co tary it would prove a con
venience and profit to them
