THE RAILROAD COMPANYS STEAMER MANTEO
The above picture is a very fair representation of the steamer Manteo
recently purchased by A B Steele president of the A St A B R R to
be run in connection with the road to develop and care for the trade be
tween various ports and Dothan and points reached from there by the
railroads The Manteo Capt F McLaughlin command is now naking
trips every five days between this point and Mobile touching at Pensacola
both ways and will probably as soon as the dock here is completed extend
its trips to New Orleans The boat is of 719 tons burthen in good condition
and has always been a profitable boat for its owners
Bay Shore Road
There is much righteous complaint
relative to the obstructions that have
I
been placed in the bay shore road be
tween the Harrison street dock and
the railroad
In front of what is known as the
Bruton lots a row of posts have been
set in the middle jf this road In
front of the Panama Ice Companys
plant there are obstructions of various
kinds some of which have been left
there since the first work was done
upon the plant From that point to
the railroad there is an accummula
tion of piling wood and debris of
various kinds that makes the road
unsafe for vehicles and useless as a
public road
The law upon this subject is plain
and it is time that it was enforced
Section 3676 of the R S reads as
follows
Whoever shall fell drag or by any
means place a tree or other obstruc
tion in or across any county settle
ment or neighborhood road regularly
used or whoever causes such ob
struction to be placed therein shall
remove the same from such road
within six hours thereafter Any
person violating the provisions of
this section shall be punished by fine i
not exceeding sixty days provided
This law shall not apply to pasture
fences and gates and the improve
ment of private property
Section 3662 reads as follows
Whoever obstructs any public
road or established highway by fenc
ing across or into the same by will
fully causing any other obstruction
in such road or highway or any part
thereof shall be punished by fine not
exceeding one hundred dollars and
the judgment of the court shall also
be that the obstruction be removed
Section 851 states that it shall be
the auty of the superintendent of
roads to supervise direct and have
i
charge of the maintenance and build
ing of all public roads culverts and
bridges in the county
Section 367S prescribes the penalty
for a road overseer neglecting his
duty and reads as follows
Any road commissioner super I
visor or overseer who willfully neg j
lects to perform the duties prescribed
in the preceding sections shall be
deemed guilty and made a party to
the offence and proceeded against as I
the original offender by any person I
Railway Dock
More timber has arrived this week
for the superstructure of this dock
and is being put in place as fast as
Mr Daniels and crew can handle it
There is cotton now ready to be
moved out of this port from points
on the railroad and the speedy com
pletion of the dock is greatly desired
by all concerned
Prices of Fish
Reports have been circulated that
the Ice company and fish dealers here
were not paying as much for fish as
were being paid in Pensacola This
is an error The same prices are
t paid here as are being paid there and
the dealers are taking all the fish that
are brought to this port
Survey Ended
Engineer Turtle completed his work
of making a survey of this harbors
entrance on Tuesday and left this
morning with the Santa Rosa for
Apalachicola Capt H B Ferguson
who came in yesterday on the Tarpon
accompanied him
Mr Turtle has been diligently at
this work for just two months and
has accomplished a vast amount of
sounding and other work attendant
upon the survey in that time He
will now get at the result of the sur
vey and submit a report to the De
partment very soon

There is preaching here every other
Sunday at 11 a m by Rev Butler
Every body is invited
We would extend an invitation to
our friends and neighbors to help us
get up a school here There are now
twelve to fifteen scholars We also
need a post office about Bayou
George
We are glad to see the trains run
ning through this country About I
30 years ago the mail was carried
through here from Vernon to St An
drews by a carrier on horse back and
only three times a week The people
had no way to come to the bay
country only by team the roads were
bumpy and but few liked to come that
way

East Bay Canal
CALLAWAY FLA Sept 14 OS
EDITOR PILOT
Please note the following letter from
the Albany Business League n
ALBANY GA Sept 9190S
Miss LILLIAN CARLISLE
Callaway Florida
DEAR Miss CARLISLE
Your inquiry of August 29th with
enclosures relative to East Bay Canal
is received We are interested but
do not care to say more until the
government engineers have had an
opportunity to look into your sugges
tions
Yours very truly
JOHN A BETJFMAN
Secretary
It is indeed most gratifying to know
that Albany is interested but I can
not see just why they wish to wait
for the U S to lead out If Uncle
Sam deepens the pass for us this next
year I think we ought to be satisfied
and show our appreciation by cutting
this short canal lied paying the ex
penses thereof out of our own pockets
I have no doubt that as soon as the
U S can get to it this work will be
done but what is the use of waiting
Some one has said If we wait for
the U S its funds will be used and
we will save our 82500000 and it will
not make any difference if we do have
to wait a few years for we have
already waited about one hundred
In reply to this we will take the one
item of cotton shipments Please tell
me how many bales do you suppose
will be shipped from the sixteen or
more river towns this Fall What
rate of freight will they pay per bale
Now take off half the saving in
having a direct water line to New
Orleans by the new steamship line
just being established and you will
see that the saving is nearly enough
to pay for cutting this short canal
Ask Dothan Alabama what it will
save on her cotton shipments this
year over last in way of freight if
you doubt the above
Therefore lets not wait Get to
work today raise the required funds
to have a preliminary survey as per
my first suggestion and make use of
Mr Steeles new steamship line until
the U S deepens our pass Then we
will be ready for the larger lines
when they make their appearance
People do not live six hundred years
these days and if we do anything in
this short life we must hustle There
is no day as guod as today to begin
pulling strong steady and with de
ter ination to win
It is certainly pleasing to watch the
growing interest in our canal and
hear the talks and suggestions but
there is one I think should be given
a little thought by all our clubs It
comes from Miss Beulah Youngblood
of the City Improvement Club of
Troy Ala It is given as an amend
ment to the suggestion in my first
letter and is as follows
Form a joint stock company all
the stock to be taken by the Improve
ment Clubs of the different river
towns to be paid for by subscrip
tions or contributions from these re
spective towns After the canal is
cut the dividends and the profits from
bonuses c to be used by the Im
provement Clubs of the several towns
to improve their own city in any way
they may desire The only expense
being that of the lock tender who can
collect the tolls as the boat pass
through
My friends if we cut this canal with
a view to business only I deem this
a wise amendment Please discuss
it at your next meeting and decide
whether to donate something to com
merce or have a perpetual income to
be used to improve our own cities
