It is generally understood in El Paso
that brewery interests, frightened at
the advance of prohibition, principally
as a result of disgusting law violations
on the part of saloon men, are behind
movement to prosecute ajl saloon law
violators In El Paso In an effort to
appease public opinion. Moore & Moore,
who announce that they have been en
gaged for such service, decline to state
who has employed them, but declare
that "the saloons must obey the law
In every respect"
Rev. Henry Easter, pastor of St.
Clement's Episcopal church, said this
morning: "The Ministers' union has
hot employed cOunse.1 to prosecute sa
loon men who violate the law and w
i -.. .
have no idea who has done so.
W. H. Long was asked if the Brewers'
association had employed counspl tn.
Prosecute saloon men violating the law,
DUt replied. ' Not that I know of."

operated from east Texas, however, and
the association is known to have taken
such steps In other cities.

As compared with the usual depth at
the close of February, conditions are fa
vorable on the upper reaches of the Rio
Grande, the average or somewhat more
than tne average aepth" "being: generally
reported. At high altitudes the snow
is well packed; at moderate elevations,
where the depths are not great, the con
dition of tbe snow is favorable for early
melting.
The following extracts from the re

Santa Fe, X. M., March 15. During
February there was an. increase in tlia
amount of snow in the San Juan, the
Rio Grande and the Canadian drainage
area lin Xew Mexico. On the south slope
of the mountains and"" in the valleys a
great deal of che snow melted towards
the close of the month and some of che
streams carried a fair volume of water,
but on the north slopes- and in the high
er mountains there remained a vast
amount of compact in- maay places It
has become almost solid iee, which will
melt, slowly and this gives assurance
of late flow and an abundance of water
in the streams and the tributaries of the
San Juan, the Rio Grande, and the Ca
nadian watersheds.
Over the San Francisco, Gila and Mim
bres there -was but little snow, in scat- '
tered dritts, in she higher canyons, and
at che close of the month the p ospect for
water for the coming season was not
encouraging. Peo7s rand southeastern
watersheds . In the depth of snow was
below the average, excep over the head
waters of the Pecos in San Miguel .coun
ty. The mountains draiaed by the
sreams of the lower Pecos were almost
without snow.
The average depth of the snow in the
mountains of the Rio Grande watershed
is 32 inches, the Canadian 23 Inches, the
San Francisco, 4. inches, and the lower
Pecos, 6 Inches.
The following notes are from reports of.
correspondents on .the Rio Grande water
shed: Osier, Colo., W. Jenkins Snow at the
timber line is fully six feet deep, and
there is more snow on the foothills than
usual. Chama, F. C. Johnson The snow
is evenly distributed in the valley3 and
very compact; ic is drifted in the moun
tains. There will be an abundance of
water. Espanola, S. F. McBride There
is a large amount of snow on .the ranges
both east and west, and prospects good
for water. Tres Piedras. J. I. .Tanntr
The snow is batfly drifted and, compact;
in many places It is swept into the can
yons. Outlook Is good for iwater sup
ply, for we have more snow than 'at the
same time last year. Red River, L. R.
Penn Snow is "drifted and swept Into
canyons; the outlook is good for plenty
of water. The snow Is heaviest in this
locality for years. Taos, A- Gusdorf The
snow ls evenly distributed and well
packed; there will be plenty of water.
Chimayo, T. Vigil The snow ls com
pact and there will be enough for wa
ter supply for the season. San Pedro N
J. Strumquis-We had Winches during
the month; all melted except oa north
west sides of mountains where there r-
mains 6 to 19 inches of compact snow.
Santa Fe, F. Owen There was no ma
terial decrease in the amount of snow
over the canyon and upper canyon of
che Santa Fe basin; snow remains deep
and compact and the prospects for wa
ter supply for ensuing season are ex
celent. Bland, J. M. Morris The snow
is nearly all gone from south slopes, but
still very compact on north slopes, al
though melting rather fast. Prospect
for water Is good. Pines, E, S. Kinnl

Good fine clothing territory is ob

quarter blood has sold at 33 cents.
Very little demand is reported for
the new Arizona clip, which is arriv
