Who Telephone
The Herald's experiment in installing a force of
telephone clerks and inviting " Wants' r by wire has
proved a great accommodation to the general public.
The Herald proposes to continue the c Wants "-by-Wire
and hopes to make the practice a permanent
public convenience. V , . '
But
Itsextended existence depends upon the prompt
panent of the little bills the system causes.
"WANTS PRESENTED AT THE COUNTER IN
THE HERALD'S BUSINESS OFFICE ARE NOT
CHARGED" the amounts are too small to permit
of bookkeeping, for them. The phone system is in
tended simply for convenience, NOT AS A MEANS
OF DEFERRING PAYMENT. "Cash When the
Collector Comes" is necessarily1 the motto of the
phoned "Wants" system, and if it is not strictly
lived up to, this very successful, convenient and de
sirable practice must be given up.

New York, N. Y., May 16. Warmer
temperatures.and general rains over the
southern otton belt precipitated a low

n-orning-. The declines are small.
Conditions Steady.
New Orleans, La., May 16. The Liver
pool Is again closed on account of the
celebration of Whitsuntide, an English
holiday, and domestic markets are shuc
out from the markets across the water.
The weather conditions are favorable
for the growing crop and this influenced
a lower level in prices today in the ne7
crop options, although near months
crops are practically unchanged. The
prices are steady.
