Russell "Walters was in from Organ yesterday on his way to the "Walters ranch north of Las Cruces. H. C. Newberry, of the American Bend, was in the city yesterday, the guest of his daughter, Mrs. "W. A. Sutherland. Professor R. F. Hare came in yes terday from the Agricultural college. He expects to leave for "Washington next week. Dr. E. D. Sinks returned to his home in El Paso last evening, after spending several days in Las Cruces on business. C. E. Rose of Gold Camp, on the east side of the Organ mountains, was a business visitor yesterday in Las Cruces. Development -work and pros pecting is about all that is doing in his camp at this time, but active oper ations wil start within a short time. J. M. Mr. Harrison is on his way home to Indianapolis. Harry G. Hayes, of Cleveland, Ohio, was a Las Cruces visitor yesterday, leaving today for home. McKinney, of Mangum, , Okla., has been received by Mrs. M. D. Lafferty. Mr. McKinney was 69 years of age. He had suffered for some time from his heart. Foster, director of the experiment station, gave the main talk of the evening on the advantages of attending a small college, at least for the four years' course, the aims of college students, and the value of dif ferent types of students. Bresident Rigney gave a short talk on the plans of the club for the year. Lemonade and watermelons were served. Miss Josephine Morehead, Hal and Jim Cox are among the late arrivals to enter college for this year. Special services will be held at the St. James church, Mesilla Bark, Sunday night, in memory of Ross Harrison, a member of the St. James Boys' choir, who died in Texico. Both choirs will participate in the services, led by Rev. Hunter Lewis. LA MESA RESIDENTS WANT ROAD CHANGED Say Proposed the Route Be; tween Mesquite and That Point is Detrimental. Las Cruces, N. M., Sept- 9. F. S. Jones, of La Mesa, was in Las Cruces yesterday and today circulating a pe tition for signatures. This petition will be presented to the county com missioners at their next session, and asks that work be suspended on the new road which was recently ordered put through between the Mesquite bridge and La Mesa. The petition re cites that' the opening of this new road In its present course, would work a hardship on the adjacent property own ers, and that there is a more feasible route for such a public road. Mr. Jones has succeeded in obtaining a large number of signatures and it is prob able that the proposed new road wjiI be ordered abandoned and a new route taken. TEMPERANCE UXIOX CLOSES LAS CRUCES CONVENTION Las Cruces, N. M., Sept. 9. Today is the last day of the annual conference of the New Mexico "Woman's Christian Temperance union and an. especially attractive program will close the meet ings tonight.
