San Francisco. CaL, Oct. 7. An at tempt to kill prince Tsai Hsun, uncle .of the emperor of China, as he stepped from the Overland train at ,the Oak land Mole, a half hour before board ing' the liner Chiyo Maru for the re turn trip to China, was frustrated late yesterday afternoon by chief secret servic operative Harry ZVIoffitt and detective sergeant George MacMahon of the local police department, when they seized and overpowered. George Fong, a member of the Toung" China association, just as he was about to draw a revolver from his pocket with Which to fire upon the rpyal visitor. Fong was handcuffed by the detec- "tives and quickly detached from the crowd that had gathered at the sta tion to welcome the prince upon his return to this city from his visit to the east. He was taken Across the bay on a ferryboat, placed in an automobile and hurried to IToffitt's office, where he made a full confession of his in tention to assassinate the prince. A five chambered 38 caliber revolver, fully loaded, was found in his pocket. He acknowledged that he had pur chased it on the day that the prince left San Francisco for his tour of the east, with the purpose of shooting him when he arrived here on his -way back to his heme. Arrest Quickly Made. The arrest was made so quickly and quietly that neither prince Tsai nor any of his retinue, nor any member of the reception party, knew anything of it until the steamer was ready to sail. Then rear admiral Thomas S. Phelps, representing the government of the United States in the final cere monies attending the distinguished visitor's departure, was informed by Moffitt of what had happened. "Wheth er the prince was told of his close call from death was not learned. In his statement to the secret service men, Fong denied that his action was the result of a conspiracy to kill the prince. He said that the organisation to which he belongs, while revolution ary in its tendencies, is in ,i;o way responsible for his attempt to slay the emperor's uncle. Burton, the man behind the Los Angeles Times editorials, is in El Paso. He is the head of the editorial department of the Times as chief edi torial writer, and has been the author of the principal editorials in the Times. Mr. Burton was in Sonora at the time of the explosion in the Times build ing, preparing to sail for Europe for a vacation of one year. He did not hear of the catastrophe until Monday, when a Texas trainman on the west coast line told him of the explosion and the resulting fatalities. Having missed his boat at Mazatlan, Mr. Bur ton came to the states and to El Paso en route to Mexico City and Vera Cruz, where he will start on his delayed vacation trip abroad. i Although 72 years old, Mr. Burton has been actively engaged in the game of getting out a big newspaper for the past seven years -without a vacation , and was just starting on a years leave of absence when the fatal explosion occurred in Los Angeles. "While abroad he will write a series of syndicated letters and magazine stories for the American newspapers and magazines, in addition to a series of special ar ticles for the Times. El Paso has been officially recognized by the Soutnern Commercial congress by the appointment of J. M. "Wyatt, of the American National bank as a dele gate to the conference of southern busi ness men at Atlanta, Ga., which opens Friday. The appointment was made by governor Campbell and is one of the di rect results of the governor's visit to El Paso during the Taft-Diaz celebra tion. The plaintiff sues for damages, claiming that while re was in the employ of the iefondant company he sustained injuries to his right eye, due to negligence on th part of his employers.
