The auto mobile belonging to Dr. "Weeks was de stroyed by fire when the gasoline tank on it exploded. The garage also was badly damaged bT the fire. Dr. Weeks was preparing to enter the car when the explosion occurred. Portales people are hearing speeches on the constitution. James A. Hall, of Elida, spoke against the document. He represented this county in the conven tion. Delegate Mabry of Clovis ad dressed the people in behalf of the con stitution, The meeting at the Baptist church has j closed. The local Baptists have extended Mr, Pledger, who conducted the meeting, a call to become pastor or the church here. TEACHERS OF TWO COUNTIES HOLD INSTITUTE IN DALHART. Dalhart, ex., Dec. 22. Dallam and TTnrt.lv counties are holdincr a. twn woks institute in Dalhart under the ' ausoices of the Dalhart Independent School district.. There is much interest: and it is one of the largest gathering of teachers from the two counties since the institute has been organized. 'Dallam county commissioners will meet this week and make' selection of the ground adjacent to Dalhart for the poor farm and. the arrangements for starting the 3000 foot deep well. The report- of the operation of the water plant during November was made at the Thursday morning meeting of tne city council, and according tovthe statement of superintendent W. E. Race, the expense the -past month was lower tlian it has ever been during the history of the company. The total num ber of gallons of water pumped 'was 77,853,723, at' an average cost per 1000 gallons of $ .04791. Total receipts during the month amounted to $1G,521.74, including water rent, $9496.29; deposits paid to guaran tee payment of water tax, $612.20, and deposits previously paid $4183. S'O. Ex penditures during November totaled $9627.08. Included In the expenditures is the sum of $500 for corporation tax, part of which goes to the state of Texas and the balance to the state of West Vir ginia, in which the International Water company is chartered. It was explained by city attorney Coldwell to alderman Blumenthal who asked as to the $500 expense that it was necessary unless the city could pay $477,000 in outstand ing bonds. The report of the earning and operat ing expenses of the water plant for No vember announced actual receipts of $12,362.96 and expenditures of $9274.8o, leaving a balance of $3088,11. Many Fail to Pay. Supt, Race also reported that he had been forced to discontinue water serv ice to a number of patrons as a result of their neglect to pay the water rent. A report of the disposition of the water works purchasing bonds to the International Water company was made by mayor C. E. Kelly. City Phyiscian's Report. Dr. W. H Anderson, city physician, reported 18 "births and 14 deatns the past week. Of the deaths six were Americans, 7 were Mexicans and one negro. Tuberculosis caused four of the deaths. The report of contagious diseases in- ) eludes three smallpox patients, aipn- theria, 7; scarlet fever, 1; typnoia xeei, six. The report of city scavenger Alderete announced receipts of $9S5.55 during October and $1015.55 for November. J W. Hadlock, sewer commissioner, reported the laying of 400 feet of S-inch sewer on Rio Grande street between Dallas and Lee streets, and 33 feet of the deep sewer from tne Sheldon hotel to the Mills building. The balance of the sewer was completed Thursday. The petition of C. H. Shapiey, 327 Erie street, asking for $20 for alleged damage to his buggy by a city wagon was denied. Alderman Clayton stated he was unable to determine that the wagon belonged to the city. Grade Ordinance Adopted. An ordinance wag adopted accepting tne grades of streets as prepared by city engineer F. H. Todd, and provid ing that grades of sidewalks must conform.
