Locomotives Are Ordered.
New York. N. Y.. Nov. 4. The most
significant feature in the steel trade
last week was the placing of heavy
contracts for finished steel products by
large consumers for shipment over the
third and fourth quarters of 1913.
Manufacturers outside of railroad
equipment matters apparently have be
come convinced of the necessity of cov
ering their requirements far ahead to
insure reasonable shipments next year.
The heavy contracts included steel
places, hoops and bands, steel pipe und
tin plate as well as rails.
Contracts for 261.000 tons of rails
were placed directly with the mills or
reservations were made for 1913 roll
ings The railroads placed orders for
nearly 15,000 cars and 97 locomotives,
with inquiries still in the market for
40.000 cars and 200 locomotives.

month was 2,800,00 tons, which ex- '
ceeded the previous maximum monthly
record by at least 150,000 tons.
The export trade continued heavy
throughout October. The Carnegie
Steel company took foreign orders for
400,000 tons during the first nine months
of the year, which is a new high record.
Sales of about 75,000 tons of Bessemer
and basic iron were made In the Pitts
burg and St. Louis districts during the
week, and it is estimated that in all
distributing districts, pig iron con
tracts aggregated about 150,000 tons,
making the total for October more than
900.000 tons.

Men would 10 times rather buy canned
fruit than to can fruit when they re
member what canning season meant in
taeir boyhood.
Thanks to advertising, tne canning
season today does not mean what It
once did. Advertising always creates
more business and competition. Ad
vertising then s responsible In a large
measure for the many time-saving de
vices which simplify canning.
Right now the hardware stores, gro
ceries, department stores end fruit
dealers are advertising canning goods.
The old screw-top jar has been suc
ceeded by one that closes easily and
quickly with one motion of the hand.
The aluminum kettle has supplanted
the porcelain lined iron kettle and the
graniteware; sterilizers, pitters. parers,
eyers are cheap and useful
Before you go at jour canning take
a run through the dvertlsing eolumns
of The Herald and see what there Is to
save vou time and to make your suc
cess surer.
