"The City" is a strong play bv an
average company, as presented at the
El Paso theater last night Hugo B
iioch, the leading man, is a splendid
1 oung actor, equal to all the require
ments of the part and above the aver
age leading man of the average road
company; his sustaining company is
satisfactory, though not exceptionally
strong. Still, to those who have never
seen "The City," this presentation is
worth seeing: it is not slighted or
"mussed up" in any degree, but, aside
from the work of Mr. Koch and
Thomas L. Voile as Albert Vorhees,
the rest of the people do not bring
put any particular features by their
acting. Most of them are natural
enough and most of them appear to
have a proper conception of their roles
but thev are just mediocre.
The play deals with the problem of
the city and its appeal to the people
of the country and the village; of its
rewards and its exactions, Its pitfalls
and its sins; it also justifies the bibli
cal injunction that "the sins of the
father are visited upon the child."
Many things are brought out that are
really light and truth that the man
in the small town can be a hypocrite
and not be found out, because he has
not real big chance to unmask him
self; that the man in the city is set
up with everybody and everything
against him and forced to make good
or get out; . he cannot wear a mask
and not have it torn from him sooner
or later, there is too much publlcitj,
too much fighting for supremacy,
power and money.
The Dlav is one that ctIds and has
' the power to hold and fascinate: it
may not preach any great sermon, but
it opens up a lot of truths; it points
the way of the transgressor as being a
very hard way; it points the way of
truth and honesty is the best way: it
points these in extremely vivid pic
tures. It Is not an unreal play: it is a
modern drama, a 20th century drama
and deals with things that are famil
iar to 20th century people. It is worth
