PURGE BOY SCOUT MANUAL
OF UN-AMERICAN STUFF
America Is to have a genuine
American Boy Scout manual.
And this manual will be purged
of all slighting references to or
ganized labor which have made
wage-earning fathers who have
read the present manual dubious
about letting their sons enjoy the
unquestioned advantages of scout-
Th« new manual, It Ib announced
from the national headquarters of
the Boy Scouts of America, will
be ready about January 1.
This announcement comes in re
sponse to protests by local scout
councils which found that the
scout manual prepared from Gen.
Sir Robert S. S. Baden-Powell's
original English manual contains
"These people allow themselves
to become slaves to the persuasive
power of a few professional agita
tors whose living depends on agi
tation; and blinded by the talk of
these men they spurn the hand
which provides the money until
they face employers to spend for
tunes either in devising machinery
which will take their place and
will not go on strike, cr in getting
foreign labor, or in removing their
business to other countries."
It is explained, unofficially, that
when Mr. Soton, who 1b an enter
prising man, mado haste to be the
first one to the publishers with an
American -scout manual he adopt
ed most of Qen. Baden-Powell's
work verbatim. This he had per
mission to do. But in his haste
to b» the first he evidently over
looked or failed to realize the ob-
Jectionableness of this and similar
other declarations In the English
Now a new and genuinely Amer
ican manual is in preparation
which will reflect American in
stead of English sentiments and
conditions. All the many fine
things In Gen. Baden-Powell's re
markable book are to be retained.
In 'liv meantime some scout
councils have directed aH scout
masters operating und»r authority
from them to disregard the doc
trines" set forth on page 35 of the
manual and all similar utterances.
The Times has never ctood for
theso un-American teachings.
Whwn C. L. Oilman, who furnishes
its weekly lesson In scouting, be
gan the preparation of the series
of articled, neither the Seton man
ual nor the Boy Scout* of America
had. made their appearance. He
had among his books of reference
the English manual, but was then,
and Is now, fully at liberty to
write only of the many fine things
