THE mOX—"Off the Road," Vitanraph drama: "The Bravery of Dora," "Pirate Gold," "Roped In," western drama; "Pathe's 5 AT THE PANTAGES Hand it to the dog Jap, the elephant Hippo and the monkey Napoleon, for they are the real "its" at the Pantages theater this week even in the face of a pretty strong bill at that. When you see a dog that can put on its own little jacket, squeeze on his little collar and play an organ accompaniment to a violin solo you wait to give him credit for having brains, and Jap seems to have plenty of them, too. Without any reflection on Jap, Hippo is some vaudevillian. He bowls, plays football and drinks good beer with ease. He is ably assisted by Napoleon, who de lights in dancing a hoedown be fore the footlights. The Boardman Sisters, singers and dancers, open the bill. Beck and Heney in a musical dancing novelty please with neveral diffi cult steps which start the ap plause. Gordon Davis, Arthur Cyril and company J.ave an amus ing skit, "Alias Trixie Kix." Daisy Harcourt returns with a new line of English wit and humor. The biograph pictures are worthy of mention. AT THE PRINCESS Those who care more for a really artistic play than for the gore and battle kind, those who prefer to see acting rather than have their ear drums burst may go to the Princess theater this week and be satisfied. "Merely Mary Ann" doesn't suggest anything that it is not, but rather underestimates Itself in its title. It is a play meant for people who care for the sweetness of life. And the Prin cess players are showing Tacoma that they can handle that sort of play better, or at least, a* well as the other kind. In "Merely Mary Ann" is a lit tle country girl—Miss Florence Bell. She finds employment in » cheap London lodging house frequented by drunken men and "down and outs." He rejects her because be cannot sell his music. She becomes wealthy after she has lost sight of him, and he be comes famous. They meet again, and she in turn rejects him. Hut in the end, "Merely Mary Ann" makes everybody glad in the only satisfactory way. Because of the length of the play, the curtain rises promptly at 8:15 this week. | AT THE EMPRESS | • • "Just Kids," which-Is exactly what the name expresses, is the favored number on a good bill at the Empress theater this week. About a birthday surprise party on a little country girl is woven a pretty 20-minute musical com edy in which figure eight other little girls and a country boy. The skit is enhanced by the romp ing of the "kids" through the audience, and the appearance of the boy, who is "goin' fishin' " down the main aisle. One of the Patty brothers, acro bats, walked down a flight of stairs on his head, as one of their series of remarkable stunts. In a comedy, "The Fire Es cape," Chnrles Deland. Mary Carr and a bell boy present an amus ing incident in hotel life —the oc casion being a time when the ho tel is being gutted by fire.
