The Queen Regent is said to have de clared ■ that her spirit can never be downed as long as she can rely on the patriotism and courage of the Span iards. Washington, May 2—3:45 p. m. — Qreat Britain's consul has notified the British foreign office that Dewey de manded the immediate surrender of the city of Manila. The battleship Oregon arrived safely at Rio Janeiro several days ago and is supposed to have sailed from there to join the flee! under ('apt. Sampson on the Cuban coast. It has been decided not to impose any war tax upon tea or coffee, but in ternal revenue taxes upon tobacco, beer, wine and spirits have been ma terially increased. The government of Portugal having proclaimed neutrality the Spanish fleet has been obliged to leave the Cape Verde islands and is supposed to have gone to the Canaries, which are a Spanish possession. Washington, May 2—3 p. m.—Presi dent McKinley has received news via Hongkong that the governor-general of the Philippines has sent a flag of truce to Commodore Dewey, which means the capitualatiou of the islands. A Washington City dispatch, dated May 2. says: The house passed with out division the war emergency bill to day. The house committee on appro priations has reported the urgent de ficiency appropriations amounting to $35,370,925, for the support of the army. The latest telegraphic reports state that none of the American vessels en gaged in the battle with the Spanish Asiatic squadron at Manila, last Sun day, were lost and that only about 20 men were killed or wounded. All the Spanish fleet was destroyed, compris ing nine vessels. The U. S. warships composing our Asiatic squadron are the Olyinpia, 5,800 tons, 38 guns; Baltimore, 4,600 tons. 22 guns; Boston, 3,198 lotus, 16 guns; Ra f»ighj 3,213 tons, 25 guns; Concord, 1, --700 tons, 25 guns; Petrel, 890 tons, 11 guns; revenue cutter McCulloch; col lier Nanshan; supply vessel Zaaire. The fact that The Liberal, which is Premier efcupwte'f organ, ad mitted com pi ?te defeat of the Spaniards gives significance to the frank an nouncement. The house pruned the war revenue bill by a vote of 181 to 181. The Demo crats and Populists, with six excep tions, voted solidly against it, and two Republicans voted with the opposition. The bill provides for the issuance of bonds to the amount of $.500,000,000, bearing 3 per cent interest, the lowest denomination to be $25. , * Washington, May 2—2 p. m.—The British consul at Manilla wired his^ov erimunt that the Spanish Philippine fleet had been practically destroyed by the American squadron. There is a very good story being cir culated . around Lopez * about a %very prominent San Juan young lady who teachers school in the above named precinct. I will ; not mention any names, but will give the:■ reader all possible advantage of guessing the name of the young lady referred to. In one .of your former ; issues it was noted, among the Lopez news notes, that the wife of a certain merchant, together with tLe young lady referred to, had just returned from a visit with up-Sound friends. It was .while in Seattle "looking around the town" that the incident occurred. Now if there is anything on the street that a woman will. not notice, new ' dresses and bonnets especially, I have yet to hear of it. It was while walking up Second Aye. one nice afternoon when the fair teacher's eyes tell. upon a sign which hung upon a store that read as follows: f Something new. One of the stoves warranted to save half your fuel." Upon reading this and wishing to bring something home she remarked to her companion, "I will buy two of them, then papa and mamma can save the whole of their fuel." The above story was told to me as a fact and if I was wrongfully informed, your readers will have to look to this prominent merchant's wife for its truthfulness. By this one can readily see that our San Juan county school teachers have some very brilliant ideas, especially when in the city. I. X. L. Beauty is Blood Deep. Mrs. Maria Blowers, wife of Mr. Hiram Blowers, died at her residence on Lopez island, at 1:15 p. m., Tuesday, April 2(5, 1898. Mrs. Blowers was a native of New York state and lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Edwards, in New York, lowa and Michigan, until her marriage with Mr. Blowers in the latter state July 24, 1856. .To them were born four sons and five daughters, all living except two sons, the eldest dieiug in in fancy, and the other, Eugene, aged 20 years, mysteriously drowned about six years ago* most probably while endeavor ing to save the lives of the two younger boys who were drowned with him as Eugene was counted an excellent swimmer. While in lowa, thirty years ago, Mrs. Blowers joined the Methodist Episcopal church and took quite an active part in all church work. She had a kind heart, full of sympathy for all in sorrow or dis tress. As a wife she was loveing and faithful; as a mother tender and watchful over the welfare of her children, as a friend steadfast and true, and as a neigh bor ever obligin and kind. Her last illness was brief but very painful, being some affection of the heart with pneumonia superad'led. To the minister visiting her during her illness | she expressed her entire trust in Jesus | Christ as able and willing to save her. Th« funeral took place on the afternoon of the 27th inst., large nnmbeis being present, both at the house and the grave, Rev. Isaac Dillon, pastor of the Lopez M. E. church, officiating.
