James C. Waugh, candidate for
judge of this judicial district, was
in the city the latter part of last
week sizing up election possibilities.
Foreman Gibson, of the new
school house, was attending to mat
ters in connection with material for
the building, at Anacortes, yester
day.
The new residence being built for
Alva Carter on Argyle avenue, is
ready for lathing and plastering,
and the painters are beginning their
woik this week.
Ihe city council met in special
session Monday evening to fix the
tax levy for the ensuing year. The
law provides that the council meet
for this purpose the first Monday in
October.
The smaller portion of N. E. Chur
chill's store building is being low
ered to the street grade, and will be
rearranged and a new front put in
preparatory to occupyancy by H.Fre
dell, the jeweler.
The next meeting of the Pomona
Grange will take place in this city
on the last Tuesday in the month—
the 22nd inst. A special program
is being arranged, and an unusually
interesting meeting is anticipated.
Attention is called to the notice in
another place of the closing of the
registration books. Any who fail to
register before next Tuesday, the
15th, will lose their opportunity for
voting at the general election. Nov.

There have been about 450 hunt
ers' licenses issued in the county
since September 1. This means
much ammunition, much sport and
considerable game. This is an un
usually good season and those so in
clined are taking advantage of it.
Wm. Randies, th? R. F. D. mail
carrier, has extra duties to per
form just now. He is compelled to
segregate all his mail matter into
its several classifications and weigh
them separate each day all this
month and next, sending the report
into the government ,
Dr Rudow received from the
Petaluma Kennels, California. Mon
day, a fine young pedigreed English
setter. There are a few good^ped
igreed setters on the island and this
new strain will be enthusiastically
welcomed by the local lovers of
really well bred dogs.
J A. McCormick has contracted
for an acetyline lighting system for
his photograph gallery. It: will in
clude an outside street light which
will be a big improvement to the
upper end of Spring street. Mr
McCormick says the acetyline light
is unexcelled for photographic pur

Chas. McKay met with an acci
dent last Thursday which has kept
him pretty quiet for a days.

olding gave way, and he fell m such
a way as to bring his entire weight
on one leg. seriously straining it.
He is about again, but not quite so
sprightly.
Gene C. Gould has been at Seattle

to Anacortes Sunday to bring back
a scow load of lumber, which was
taken around to the west coa&t

with his boat Klatawa.
Rev. F. H. Walker, the new pas
tor of the M. E. chucrh, preached
his first sermons here Sunday morn
ing and evening to good congrega
tions. His family is expeted to ar
rive from Tacoma the first of next
week.
Van Sargent, Al. Coffelt, Jack
Geoghegan, Guy and Cecil
Carter visited their happy hunting
grounds last Saturday evening, re
turning Sunday evening with three
fine deer. They state, that not
withstanding the alleged ravages of
the Friday Harbor game hogs dur
the past few years, deer seem to be
plentiful on Orcas this season, they
having seen five, jumped two or
three more that they didn't see and
killed three in a few hours hunting
Sunday.
The Str. Rosalie Wednesday load
ed 27 tons of salmon—over a thou
sand cases—to be taken to Belling
ham, from where they will be ship
ped to New York. *She came back
to West Sound Wednesday night
and loaded 600 boxes of apples for
shipment to Alaska by way of Seat
tle. From West, Sound she came
back here, arriving at about 5 a. in.
Thursday, and loaded a large quan
tity of sal/non at the F. H. P. Co s.
cannery.

the Gene C. Gould residence is be
ing repainted and the i oof receiv
ing a second coating of pitch.
Arch Fleming brought in a pecu
liar specimen of potato yesterday.
It had grown so as to form a groop
—practically ten potatoes grown to
gether.
The socialist meeting at Odd fel
lows hall, Tuesday evening, was well
attended. E. Lux of Bellingham,
and Wm. Hogan, candidate for the
legislature from this county, gave
interesting talks.
The Eiler Music House of Belling
ham is inaugurating a piano cam
paign at this point at present, as
will be noticed by their advertise
ment on another page. The compa
ny is represented here by Mr. F. A.
Ellsworth.
The picture show was not ready
in all details for an entertainment
Wednesday night, though the films
were on hand and tested. Every
thing will be in readiness for Satur
day night, when a good performance
is promised.
Sheriff Boyce started yesterday
for Bellingham, in repsonse to a
message from the authorities there
to the effect that some parties were
being held in custody who were
caught on a' hunting trip on Orcas,
without any licences.
The Chas. Somers Co. of Seattle,
announc; another "island" sale
through their office. The sale is
to N. H. Clark of Seattle, of the
W. E. Sutherland (formerly La-
Plante) property, situated between
Orcas and West Sound, tin Orcas
island and containing about 60 acres
with improvements.. The consid
eration is not gi\eji. We under
stand Mr. Clark, witn his family,
will immediately occupy the place
and begin extended improvements.
Boston Tom Dead
Coroner Reed, accompanied by
Undertaker Harpst, She. iff Boyce
and Attorney Irwin, went to Orca's
island yesterday in reLponse to a
summons to hold an inquest over
the body of an old Indian known
as Boston lorn, who was found dead
in his cabin, at North Beach. He
had been suffering from pneumonia,
and neighbors had attended him.
but he had died unattended. The
remains were buried on the lot
where his cabin stood. He is spok
en of as the oldest resident of Orcas
island, having residence there when
the first white settler arrived.
The Humphrey Meeting
It is now arranged to have Con
gressman Humphrey arrive here in
time to give a talk this- (Friday)
afternoon, and then give a short
talk at Maddens corners at 7:30
before the Harvest Home dance be
gins. In case he does not arrrive
in time for the afternoon meeting,
he will proceed directly to the cor
ners.
