The city of Colville is growing. Its
Chamber of Commerce is an active
body of business men who welcome all
who wish to make a home In a growing
business center.
Those who desire a suburban or
country home, with tlie advantage of
good schools, ha.c a var ed choice of
employment—fruit growing, dairying,
poultry raising, truck (arming, diver
sified farming, or lumbering.
Dairying experts claim the Colville
valley Is the most ideal place in the
northwest for profitable dairying.
F. A. Hunt ley, state commissioner
of horticulture, declares that the Col
ville valley is a most Ideal section for
pear raising. This statement Is sup
ported by J. C. Kakle, district horti
cultural Inspector.
The Colville Orchard Company In
1911 produced its first crop, about 3500
boxes, of well colored and fine quality
apples. In 1912 It will produce 30,000
boxes.
There are thousands of acres of land
In the Colville country which can be
made to produce Just as heavily.
The Colvllle valley Is particularly
adapted to the raising of all commer
cial varieties of pears.—H. W. Sterrett
deputy rtate horticultural Inspector.
I consider the Colvllle section an
excellent hog country. I attribute this
mainly to our pure water from springs
and clear streams, clover and alfalfa,
with few sudden changes of temper
ature. Well-bred hogs of any of the
leading breeds, when properly cared for
make rapid growth and bring from one
to two cents more than the Spokane
market With the market that pro
ducts command here, a farmer can
make a very comfortable living,—Henry
,W. Foster.
Land suitable for farms and orchards
may be bought at reasonable prices.

nual report was then read, and on mo
tion was accepted and ordered pub
lished. The city treasurer's annual re
port was then received.
On motion a vote of thanks was ex
tended to the retiring city officials for
their efficient services rendered during
the past year.
The mayor then made a short talk
to the retiring council, and In sub
stance said that from a professional
and business point of view he was
pleased to retire from the duties of
mayor, but he would be glad to have
been able to carry out some of the
policies and finished some of the work
that had been initiated during his four
years as councilman and mayor.
On motion the retiring council ad
journed sine die.
The retiring city attorney, W. H.
Jackson, then administered the oath of
office as follows: Henry R. Spedden,
mayor; Grover Graham, clerk; Al Miller,
treasurer; H. Wade Bailey, attorney;
councllmen for first ward, Chauncey St.
Clair and W. T. Stenger; councilman for
second ward, J. E. Dodson; councllmen
for third ward, R. A. Thayer and G. B.
Ide. Mayor Spedden then called the
council to order, and on roll call It was
found that all councilmen and other
city officers were present except Hugh
Waddell, hold-over councilman from the
second ward.
After a few fitting remarks by the
mayor the order of business under the
head of "communications and peti
tions" was taken up. An application
from F. H. Bradley for the appoint
ment of night marshal was read, in
which the applicant agreed to attend to
the duties of the office at a saving in
salary of $140 per year to the city. An
application by F. O. Quillen to be re
tained was then read. The application
of Claude Lewis for night marshal was
then read, to which was attached a
petition containing the signatures of
fifty business and professional men. By
order of the mayor these names were
not read An application was then read
from J. M. Williams for the appoint
ment of water commissioner.
The mayor then appointed William
I3ryant as night marshal. Some dis
cussion was made by the council, one
favoring Bradley for the reason that
he was cheaper for the city, another ex
pressing himself as being satisfied with
Mr. Quillen, the present Incumbent. On
roll call the mayor's appointment was
confirmed by a vote of four to two. The
mayor then appointed C. O. Smith for
the office of water commissioner. In
this appointment the vote stood three
to three, and the matter was deferred
to some future date.
After allowing a few small bills, the
bonds of the various officers were ac
cepted. An ordinance against peddlers
was advocated by a number of the
council. Thayer asked that the ordi
nance hook be revised and rebound. On
motion the attorney was Instructed to
Investigate the ordinances, pass on their
validity and report his findings to the
council.
The matter of the appointment of a
day marshal, after some debate, was
laid on the table. The clerk was or
dered to draw warrants for the sala
ries of the retiring: officers, and to ad
vertise for bids for the city printing.
