A SOLDIER OF FORTUNE.
Strenuous Career of William Walker,
the Noted Filibuster.
William Walker, the noted nllbnatei
and soldier of fortune, was born in
Nashville, Term.. on May 8. 1824. Foi
• time he was an editor In New Or
Jeans and In 1850 went to California.
In the summer of 1853 he organized
an expedition for the conquest of the
Mlxlcan state of Sonora. He captured
several small towns; but, his provisions
and ammunition running short, be
crossed "the border Into the United
States and surrendered to the govern
ment officials. He was tried at San
Francisco for violating the neutrality
taws, but was acquitted.
Walker's next venture was an Inva
sion of Nicaragua, where he was for a
time successful and had himself pro
claimed president Later he was driven
from the country. Lute In 1858 be
started with a force of adventurers for
Honduras, but a shipwreck caused •
suspension of the expedition.
In June. 1800, be made a second at
tempt and captured tbe town of Trux
lllo, but was compelled to flee and sub
sequently surrendered to . tbe captain
of the British sloop of war Iscarus. by
whom be was handed over to the Hon
duran government He was condemned
by court martial and on Sept 12, 1800,
wus shot to death at Truxlllo.
