Comparative Statement of Assessment of Whitman County.
— Comparative statement of the assessment of Whitman county, Washington, for 1908 and 1910, prepared by T. J. Welty, deputy county
assessor. This statement shows the assessment of lands in Whitman county, improved and unimproved, with the average value per acre by
townships, for the years 1908 and 1910; also the tax paid for the year 1908; also the assessment of the towns of the county for 1908 and 1910.
and the taxes paid for 1908. The statement also shows the total assessment of 1908 and 1910; it further shows a comparative statement of
the tax levy for .908 and 1910. If the taxpayers of the county will study this statement and get a comprehensive understanding of it they
will know for what they are paying their money. Notice the large amount paid for schools for which persons having children to send to school
will be duly thankful, provided the money is economically and properly expended. The statement shows that the levy for the year 1908 was
17 1-6 mills for state and county purposes. Under the law the state can levy 10 mills on the dollar for all purposes and the county 30 mills, a
total of 40 mills They did not exhaust one-half of the amount they could levy for 1908, which cisproves of the fallacy that the assessment of
property fixes the amount of tax to be paid. If the levy was exhausted then the assessment might be the cause of higher taxation.
