WHITMAN COUNTY MOTES
Brief Items of Interest from
Near-by Towns.
Vernon F. McFerron has bfen elected
principal of the St. John school.
J. C. Weyroouth, manager of the
Palouse Steam laundry, drank carbolic
acid one day last week but has recovered.
Work ia progressing rapidly on a new
$20,000 echool house at Lamont in the
extreme northwestern part of Whitman
county.
Rosalia claims that over 2000 Dames
were registered in her guest book on the
Fourth. Each guest who registered was
given a pennant.
James Long of Elberton, owner of one
of the largest prune orchards in the
Palouse country, reports that his trees
will bear a good crop of fruit this year.
James ("adzow, the new postmaster at
this place, took possession of the office
last Saturday and will attend to Uncle
Sammy's business in the future —Maiden
Register.
Lumber has arrived in Lamont for the
erection of a large warehouse to be built
by the Northern Urain company to take
care of ths bumper crop which is soon
to be harvested in that vicinity.
The Oakesdale ball team claims the
championship of the league, which was
composed of Tekoa, Oakesdale, Garfield
and Farmington. There is a dispute
over a game with Tekoa which is Oakes
dale's rival for the championship.
For the third time in as many weeks a
Pullman business house was burglarized
last Saturday night. The last time it
was ClarksoD Brothers' store that was
entered through a rear window. The
burglars secured nbout $25 and some
email articles.
Three people were seriously injured
during the celebration at. Maiden when a
race horse plunged into the crowd. The
injured are John Crutcher, a man of
middle age living near Maiden, Harold
Gerriall, a lad of 10 years from
Avery, and John Vuurlis, a farmer froai
near Rock Lake. The injured are all
expected to recover.
For the first time in '20 years the
houses of prostitution were finally cloeed
in the city of Palouse Saturday. At the
opening of the present city administra
tion an ordinance was passed abolisb
iDg the houses in the city and after a
number of arrests and convictions the
proprietor of the only remaining house
has decided'tc clone the house and leave
town.
J. If. Luther a prominent farmer of
Dusty, was in town Wednesday serving
notices upon aeader and thresher men to
"clean up" their machines aDd rigs be
fore coming to his farm in the Dusty
section. "Last year," said Mr. Luther,
"I was put to an expense of $3000 by
men who came from a district where Jim
Hill and other wi*eda abound to head
and thresh my cropn."—La Cronae Cop

pany now owos or lies leased live ware
houses at PalouHP and men are at work
putting them ia condition to receive a
heavy crop Two of the warehouses are
on the Spokane. & Inland, two on the
Northern Pacific and one on the Wash
ington, Idaho and Montana. C. W.
McFarlaud has been re elected to look
after the grain business at that point
for the Farmers' Fiducational and Co
operative Union.
Two carload* of grain sacks from
Portland to the Interior Warehouse
company of La I'rosse arrived this week
and are beiDg hauled out by the farm
ers. LaCrosee local farmers' uuion early
last spring placed an order with the In
terior Warehouse company for 38.0UU,
and Dusty union for 43,000 sacks. In
each instance the union got their sacks
for $6.25 f. o. b. Portland, which would
make the price laid down in LaCrosse
something less than $0 GO a hundred.
W. M. Dobson, a La Crosse farmer,
had a fly light on the back of his left
hand Saturday and though he tried
several times to remove it the insect
stuck to the nVsii as if glued. He had
to pick the insect from his band and in
doing so noticed it had stuck its bill deep
into the flesh. Thinking no more about
it the man attended to his work, but in
the middle of the night his haod began
to swell, until it reached the size of two
hands. He aroused one of the members
of his family, who came to town for a
physician, who declared it a case of
blood poisoniog. Had he neglected to
take immediate care of his hand the
doctor says the man would undoubtedly
have lost it, if not his life.
LACROSSE NEWS ITEMS.
J. C. Ogden arrived Friday from Pluni
mer, Idaho, to take charge of the engine
for Win, Thomaa during the harvest
seaeoD.
Jae, MeKinnis has recovered from his
recent operation sufficiently to be around
again, lie came up from Walla Walla
Tuesday to attend to packing and mov
ing their household goods.
D. E. Pickard is reported no better
and has gone to Juliaetta, Idaho, for
treatment.
Mies Ella Hackett returned Tuesday
from a week's outing with friends at
Spokane. She brought Miss Gertrude
O'Donnell home with her to spend va
cation in the country.
Mr*>. John Barger and little daughter
were Eodicott visitors between trains
Saturday.
Ralph Wilcox returned from Southern
Idaho Saturday where he has been on
his homestead.
Mrs. Wilcox and daughters, Edith and
Ethel are spending the summer near
Pullman, hoping to improve the health
of MiBS Ethel.
Harvest has commenced in the vicinity
of Pampa.
Ai Camp has recently purchased a new
40-horse power touring car, making the
trip overland in it from Walla Walla
Sunday.
Mr. and Mr?. G. J, Scbadegg report a
large time at the K. C. picnic at Oolfax
—going Saturday noon and returning
Sunday evening.
Mrs. Susie A. Dezell of Sunset and
sister of Minueapolis were over Sunday
guests at the J. E Moore home.
Mr*. Bert Keaton and daughter now
of Washtucna has been taking care of
Grandma Keaton the past week. They
returned home Wednesday.
PLATS NEW TOWNS.
Located in Opposite Corners of
Whitman County.
Phillip Roach has platted a part of
the southeast quarter of section 29-20
--39 near Lamont in the northwestern
part of the county. The plat was ap
proved by the comnjiaeioners at their
meeting last week. The new town is to
be called Roachdale.
John H. Evans has filed a plat of
Evans' Orchards Tracts with the county
auditor. The tracts are down on the
Snake river in the extreme southeastern
part of the county near Clarkston. This
plat was filed July 7 and the filing fee
amounted to #0 25. The charge for fil
ing a plat with the auditor is 25 cents a
lot regardless of the size of the lots.
Requirements for Teachers.
It will be of interest to teachers and
school directors throughout the county
to know that according to the new law
temporary teachers certificates, valid
until the end of the school year may be
issued to anyone holding a certificate of
graduation from an accredited school
Temporary certificates vaiid until the
next teachers examination may be issued
to any person who is not in the state
prior to the week of examinations last
previous who has not at any time taugt t
or resided in this state provided that
such person at time of application holds
a certificate valid in some other state
and has had nine months successful
teaching pxperieuee. One vho has mver

ited school, must take the regular teach
ers examination iv order to teacb.
Many Coyotes Killed.
During the three months ending with
the last day of June 411 coyote skins
were presented at the office of the audi
tor of Whitman county and a bounty
of $1 was paid on eecb. A bounty of
£5 was also puid on one wild cat killed
during the quarter. The amount paid
for wild animal bounties will be reiin
burned to the county from the state
treasury.
Many Automobiles in Whitman.
According to figures compiled in the
office of County Assessor Walters there
were 14-tautomobiles in Whitmpn county
March 1. The number has been more
than doubled during the past year. The
records show that when the census was
taken a year ago there yere only GG
machines in the county.
Contract for Cement Work.
Holliday &. Hughes have the contract
for putting up the concrete piers for the
foundation for the addition to the Col
fax Flouring mill. Bids for the con
struction of the warehouse have been
received and the milling company is con
sidering them
Rathbun for Deputy Engineer.
J. A. Rathbun, formerly connected
with the highway department, has ac
cepted a position as deputy county en
gineer under Engineer John M. MeCaw.
Mr. Rathbun, accompanied by his wife,
arrived in town a few days ago and took
up his official duties at once.
