It Is said that nil the features count

Clark fair from nil other world exposi
tions hns been smothered by some mys
terious brand of ice cream put up and
dished up on the spot. Philadelphia's
Centennial exposition left behind mem
ories of Machinery hall and, to de
scend from the sublime to the ridicu
lous, the dairy kitchen. At Paris It
was the Eiffel tower, at Chicago tin;
Whjte City aud at St. Louis the elec
tric lighting of the cascades.
Figures will lie, so perhaps it Isn't
important to know that Partlnnd fulr
patrons are consuming more cream
than was put away in St. Louis, and
on the Fourth of July specifically near
ly three times ns much was eaten as
at gt. Louis on the same dny. Possibly
St. Louis had other refreshments ap
pealing to the palate and Portland has
slnjjdy tills oue. However, that does
not dispose of the subject. Tourists de
clare that the Portland cream Is inim
itable and that the rest of the country
would be glad to get it at tiny price.
Evidently tliere Is a secret in the con
coction of this delicacy, and after the
fair people have worked It out—that is,
if the season is not too late- the land
wiU be pifrmitted, all for 10 cents per,

A Pointer For a Postal Savings Bank.
The most astounding feature of the
colossal banking by mail enterprise re
cently checked by the government au
thorities was the readiness with which
tht people put up their money to a
stranger. The publications which ad
vertised the business wer« owned by
th» banker, and hundreds of thousands
of readers deposited money or bought
stock without taking the precaution to
investigate and safeguard their Invest
ments.
Xhe Inducements held out by this nov
el concern were the ease of transmit
ting money to and from the bank and
the light expenses of administration.
Depositors' checks were certified and
became cash anywhere.
A United States postal bank system
would have all the advantage which
this enterprise offered, would be sim
pler and, moreover, absolutely secure.
Such a system, accessible to all and
founded upon the unassailable credit of
the government, would Insure to the
masses adequate facilities for protect
ing their money and at the some time
be an Incentive to saving.
Generals Kurokl and* Oku are mem
bers of the Presbyterian church, Vice

General Sarrata, who commanded tno
Japanese forces in the war with. China,

dent of the Tokyo Young Men's Chris

— Cozad's dog and pony show was
well patronized at both its perform
ances in this city Wednesday, and the
crowds were apparently well satisfied
with the way the dumb actors be
haved. The human clowns, however,
w.r.' pretty "bum," and had their
part of the shuw been cut out, it would
have been worth nearer the money.
—On Friday, September 29, the
ladies of the Christian church will give
ne of their popular chicken suppers in
the basement of the church. Supper
