AWFUL FAMINE IN RUSSIA.
Nearly Twenty Million Persons Are
in Need of Food.
Writing from the Russian famine
district, Dr. Kennard, sent by the So
ciety of Friends to investigate condi
tions, draws an appalling picture of the
suffering. He says:
"This is the worst famine Russia
has known. No less than 20,000,000
people cannot live without aid to see
another harvest, and 1 may say that,
this figure lias not only been approved
by the zcmstvo organization, but also
by the government itself. The date of
the harvest will vary with the latitude
and the famine stricken region is
spread over such a wide area (five
times the size of France) that more

FREE FIOHT IN A CHURCH.
Baptists In Open Battle During Morn
ing Service*.
Portsmouth. Ohio. April 22.—Rival
ry berweon factions of the Free Will
Baptist church broke out here in open
battle during this morning's service.
A faction opposing the pastor. Rev.
freeman Chase, attempted to hold ser
vice wiih another minister In charge.
This was resented by the Chase fac
tion and soon blows were bHng freely
exchanged. During the melee many
women fainted and others ran sen am-
Ing into the street. The police were
applied to. but refused to Interfere,
Finally the new minister withdrew,
leaving Mr. Chase's supporters in
charge and order was restored.
The Evolution of
Household Remedies
The modern p :t<'nt medicine busi
neea is the natural outgrowth of the
old-time bouishold remedies.
In the early history of this country,
EVERY FAMILY HAH US HOME
MADE MEDICINES. Herb teas, bit
tt M, laxatives hikl tonic.-', were to be
found in almost every house, cum
pounded by the housewife, sometimes
assisted by the apothecary or the fam
ily doctor. Suoh remedies hh picra,
which was sloes and quassia, dissolved
in apple brandy. Sometimes a hop
tonic, made of whiskey, haps and bit
ter harks. A wore or more of popular,
home-made remedies were khuscom
p< unded, the formulae for which were
pa led along from house to house,
sometimes written, sometimes verbally
communicated.
The patent medicine business is a
natural outgrowth from this whole
some, old time custom. In the In-pin
ning, suriiH enterprising doctor, im
preseed by the usefulness of one of
thene home-made remedies, would take
it up, improve it in many ways, manu
facture it on a large scale, advertise it
mainly through almanacs tor the home,
and thus it would become used over a
large area. LATTERLY THE EIOUBE
HOLD REMEDY BUSINESS TOOK A
MORI-: EXACT AND SCIENTIFIC
FORM.
Per Una was originally one of these
old time remedies. It was used by the
Mennonites, ol Pennsylvania, before it
was offered to the public fur Bale. Dr.
Hartman, THE ORIGINAL COM
POUNDER OF PERUNA, is of >len
nonite origin. First, he prescribed it
for his neighbors anil Inn patients. The
sale of it increased, and ut hist he eH
tablished a manufactory and furnished
it to the general drug trade.
Peruna is useful in a great many oil*
matic ailments, such as coughs, colds,
sore throat, bronchitis, and catarrhs!
diseases generally. THOUSANDS OF
FAMILIES HAVE LEARNED THE
USE OF PERNUA and its value in
the treatment of these ailmi nts. They
have learned to trust and believe in I)r.
Hartman's judgment, and to rely on
his remedy, Peruna.
JAP COOLIES CREEP IN,
Go to San Francisco and Reship to
British Columbia, Then
They Slip Over Line.
Under the regulations goverlng the
1 entrance into this country of Japanese
laborers, there Is no way of prevent
ing the Japanese from Honolulu trans
shipping ai San Francisco for British
Columbia. It Is evident from Inquiries
that have been made by officials of this
government, that the Japanese, to
whom the Japanese government issues
passports to Mexico or the Hawaiian
islands, have no intention of remain
ing there. Their destination, as the
laborers, themselves have admitted on
crossexamination, is the United states.
Recently several hundred Japanese
laborers were Interrogated In Mexico
as to their intentions. Every one of
them said he expected sooner or
later to reach this country. Some of
them were in serious financial BtraitS,
They were awainting opportunity to
get across the border into this coun
try. The same is true of Japanese
who are going to British Columbia.
There is no work for them there and
they expect to get into the United
States as soon as possible. The regu
lations governing tiie exclusion of
Chinese laborers do not apply to the
Japanese laborer.
When Chinese are shipped in transit
through the United states to another
country, a photograph is taken of each
individual and the railroad or steam
ship company carrying him is required
to give the government a bond to
prevent his escape. It is different with
the Japanese. Ko photographs are
taken and no bonds are exacted from
the transportation company. If a Jap
anese laborer escapes from the train
or steamship in transit, the govern
ment has no recourse. That many of
them do take advantage of the chance
offered them to get Into this country
is known officially, but there is no
way under the regulations to prevent
them embracing the opportunity.
Commissioner Sargent declines to
discuss the subject, but it Is known
that Secretary Straus of the depart
ment of commerce and labor is keep
ing In close touch with the situation.
Trouble is being experienced in han
dling the question, however, particu
larly in relation to the Japanese im
migrants who are arriving from Mexi
co. It is practically impossible to pre
vent them from being smuggled across
the border and the government has
no means of Identifying them after
they reach this country. The question
is likely to become more serious In
the future.
