THE STORAGE RESERVOIR
QUESTION STILL AGITATED
Somi* uf the People Are Anxious to
Hiive the Water Stored**"
Leading Opinions.
It has been rumored recently on good
authority that steps are to be taken soon
by the people of Yakiina and Kittitas
valleys looking to the conservation of
waters at the sources of the streams
passing through these valleys.
Under the existing state laws these
waters can be appropriated and stored
behind dams, and since it seems haolly
probable that the federal government
will lend their aid to the project within '
tbe next long while, perhaps a combina
tion could be formed among the penple
most vitally Inters ted by which the
problem can be solved.
Borne Opinions of leading men along
this line are as follows:
R. K. Nichols—The people of Vaklma
and Kittitas valleys should nt once coin
bine, _it together, formulate nnd put |
Into execution some broHil mi*arare for
tbe storage of waterat the head of our i
rivers for the supply and development
through irrigation of the Immediate
watersheds of the Yakima river.
II i.. Sci-iiiii:ii--The j-eoph'nf Kittitas 1
and Vakima valleys are uol in a position,
tn undertake any such projeel as the
building of reservoirs at the head of it.**;
streams. The government for the pres
ent at least will do nothing, and in
order to perfect auch an undertaking it
will require capital behind the scheme
beyond tin* realisation of these two val-1
leys. If tin' Northern Pacific can be
induced with their millions of money to
appropriate these waters, pat in these
reservoirs and then dish it out to the
people proportionately it will be a move
ment of the greatest imiHirt to this sec*
tion of the country. It is tiossible that
. urli ii proposition will be effected;
Eowabd Wiiitmiiv—l would like very
much to see something done in connec
tion with tin' storage of waters at thej
head of these streams. It occurs to me
that the various canal companies, whoi
are dependent apon the waters of the
Yakiina river might gel together, fortiiu
late a plan and by co-operation make
some positive movement looking to the;
conservation of theee waters. I am
Convinced that for the future develop-j
inent of the country through here some
thing 'it tlii" nature must lie accom
plished.
EtoasHT Hi nn—l would strongly favor
a movement on the part of the people of
theae valleys taking the initiative in the
proposition of patting In storage reser
voirs, but this same question was tlis- j
cussed at Olympia last winter ami it was
thought impracticable, for tbe reason
that iii handling such a project some- ,
body must take the reins and do the 1
hustling, and as tn who this would Is* I r
the matter of inducing some (MM to pro- j
mote the schi'ine was a hard nut tol
crack. I feel positive the necessity fnr;
siune definite action in tbe project and
would like to sec someone engineer it
through.
\V. 11. I'i:hm\n — The people of
Kittitas and Yakima valleys might pos
sibly form a satisfactory combination
and make it possible to construct stot
age reservoirs at tbe beads of the valley
streams I should much rather see the
N. P. railroad company, who has the
money t" undertake such a project, jump
in and to •!" r-si~ work. They are the;
people in my opinion t" assume such
responsibility, and would under all the
existing circumstances be Compelled to
.leal fairly and equitably witb the whole
people.
