The lumbei manufacturers, if their tale is to li.- beljec,.,|, are running their plants at .1 'lead loss just to give the poor working men a job! Oh. rats! Th>- greatest good 'hat the coming legislative session can do is to transact their business promptly and adjourn and t the tbe people of the state a rest. We have had about all the fool legislation We can stand in on,- year. over 100 attorneys in Seattle have sign.-d a call for a meeting of the King l County Bar association to draw up a petition to the legislature asking them to repeal the amendment to the direct, primary law passed last winter which relegated the nomination of supreme court judges back to the old conven- 1 tion system. They realize the fact that under tbe old system "f convention manipulation the corporations had the game in their own hands and could force the nomination of men favorable to cor porate Interests. 'I here was no excuse for the legisglature taking the action , they did and if Gov. Hay was the eham- I pi«m of the people he would now have Us believe he would have vetoed that ' obnoxious measure the moment it reach ed him. If any legislation is to be eon- t sidered by the ial session this pri- t mary amendment should be repealed. ' Enemies of the [jrecl primary law will . be right on the This is proven by | the informs- n recently given that an i attempt would be made to again pass the bill whl ; I bil ite! candidates for , the legs ire signing any pre-election , pledge- Th' people have said they want ed a dire t primary law. The rich man in the vast majority of cases is incapable of seeing the needs of the conmon people His ... its md usocia tions have made him so. Xor can he if he would break loose the ties that bind him to his furm*-r sssociatei in the iiioney-gettintr whirl. He owes them, too much and it is but natural that having helped ensconce him in his aeat in the senate they should expect him to remember them in matters of legislation. And they are not disappoint cd. Xo, give Us a man in humbler cir cumstances as our ideal representative. There are men of great brains who are of and for the people. Men with ability and training who might have become creatures of the trusts and in turn en riched by them but who have had strength of character enough to cast their lot with the common people and fight their battle against greed and cor ruption. They haven't amasaed many lollara I suae it is not a lucrative bus Iness to oppose concentrated wealth. But such a man is apt to remain true t" 'lis ideals of light even in the I. S. sen ile. Sin h a man is Judge .l.ilin K. Hated by corporate wealth -mi much so that the whole primary law was dealt a staggering blow by the last] legislature to make it Impossible that j he could be nominated foi a seat on] the supreme bench of the state at the next election. So, we have no hesitancy n declaring that of the men in sight rho aspire to the senatorial logs of Samuel Piles. Judge John F. Humphries itnnds as our choice for that honorable ■ sltion. An I we believe we voice the entiments of the great majority of! working men of this state. Senators LaFollettc of Wisconsin nd Beveridge of Indiana arc receiving i great deal of criticism just now hough the columns of the daily papers i their stand on tariff legislation. As he recognized leaders of the ins irgent eptlblicans in the senate they are 1 iniel for impeding the passage of the nriff bill and thus unduly prolonging he session. And as the uncertainty of iriff changes is "hurting business," tcssrs. LaFollettc and Deveridgs arc o blame for the delay in t'iie return of irospcrity to the country because they nd their followers chose to place ob tructions in the way of Aldrich and his 'ellows. This is t!ie way the papers ex lain their attitude towards these gen lemen. They recognize of course the bllity and integrity of the gentlemen, it"., et'. But what is it that the in surgents are really guilty of doing? 'rying to carry out the party deelara : on in the Chicago platform. That is ..cir crime. They believe that when a arty promulgates a platform and cou riers it good enough to go before the eople for their suffrage, the party if placed in power should attempt to carry it the provisions in that platform. The stand patters insinuate that the latform did not promise "tariff revis nn downward" in specific terms but imply promised to "revise the tariff." Despite this squirmim.' the fact remains hat the voters of the country did in terpret the tariff clause in the Chicago latform to mean "revision downward" md that the platform makers at that time intended that it should be so in terpreted for the very good reason that the country was demanding such ac tion. And in the states of tlie middle west where the call for revision was loudest, the campaign orators shouted I themselves red in the face over tariff re luctlon and the benefit it would bring tv the country. Senator LaFollettc be lieves that party pledges should be binding upon the party making them. Senator Aldrich and his crowd believe ; that party pledges are made to get Vi tes, That is the differ ence bet ween 1 i them. Which crowd commands your respect and admiration, the insurgents, win) are true to what they believe to be the country's best interests, or the fel-I lows who stick to "special interests?"
