DEATH MAY BE THE PENALTY.
AWFUL PRICE MISB DEACON MAY PAY IN .HER .EFFORT TO
BECOME A "PERFECT BEAUTY.''
PARIS, Dec. 13— Disfigurement
for life, and perhaps an early death,
is the penalty Miss Gladys Deacon,
who is Supposed to be the prettiest
American girl in Europe, is paying
fof a mere whim.
In an effort to gain a perfect Gre
cian profile of feature, she has sac-
rificod every chance she has of be
ing \m Belle Americalne, hereafter.
At the poiut wher nose joins
the forehead, there was a small,
.scarcely noticeable depression. An
artist told her that this was the
only flaw in an otherwise faultless
Grecian profile.
Miss Deacon's vanity whs touch
ed, and she went at once to a spec
ialist to have the operation por
pormed that would bring iter perfec
tion, and "necrosis," or death of
the hone. Is the result. Necrosis
is a slow, relentless disease, and
STRANGE EXPERIENCE
WITH MAO CABMAN.
PARIS, Dec. 13.—Paris is laugh
ing and*at the same time shudder
ing over the adventure of a well
known woman the. other night. Be
ing at a friend's house late at night,
she ordered a cab to take her home.
She get into .the cab at 1 o'clock,
After keeping it waiting for an hour.
The cabman grumbled that he had
been kept waiting, but was prom
ised that he would he well paid.
He climbed upon his box and be
gan to drive rapidly. The woman
soon discovered, to her dismay, that
she was being taken out of the city.
For an hour tho cabman drove furi
ously and Inally stopped in a de
serted side street, outside the forti
fication. He got dowu from the
box and informed his pabhenger
that she would have to play cards
with him, at the same time produc
ing a dirty pack of cards.
The trembling woman, who had
her purse and watcn ready to give
the cabman, now saw that he was
mail, and resolved to humor him.
By the light of the cob lamps she
played two games of ecarte with
him and won them both, wheerupon
the cabman remounted his box and
drove her directly home.
When his fare was offered him
he declined it, telling his passen
ger that she had just won it from
him at cards.
BAND CONCERT.
The Inland Empire band will
Sunday night render another one of
its delightful concerts at the Spo
kane theater. Among the special
ties is a violin solo by llerr Adolph
Pliel, a flute solo by A. Kauaert
and a vocal solo by Mrs. Charles L.
Frees c, the well-Known soprano.
Mrs. Robert A. Glen will accom
pany as pianist.
unlcßs promptly checked is invaria
bly fatal. Miss Deacon is well nigh
prostrated, and is using every
means known the medical and sur
gical science to conquer it. She
has also expressed the deepest re
gret that she ever thought an alter
ation of her features necessary.
The great fear of her friends is,
however, that hor regrets are too
late, and the fascinating beauty is
| destroyed forever.
The operation which was per
formed on Miss Deacon's nose is
known as the "parafflne treatment,"
and consist! of the injection of par
lafflne and vaseline uuder the epider
mis at a temperature of 104 degrees.
iits purpose being to fill the cavities
where the hone has been removed.
I The operation is not painful,
amounting to little more than the
prick of a pin. Miss Deacon was
delighted with the apparent suc
cess of the operatiou, and watched
the healing day by day with the un
, feigned Joy of a child.
In a few days, however, a
set in ami the nose became so pain
ful that she could neither sleep nor
jrest. She finally could endure the
agony no longer, and went to a
physician, who told her that necro
sis had set In and that unless ho
roic actions were taken at once
her life might be the forfeit.
In her desperation she has sent
for some of the world's greatest
specialists, but tip to the present
time they have boon able to afford
her no relief.
Miss Deacon, it will be remem
bered, created such a stir a while
ago In connection with her reported
engagement to the crown prince of
Germany. When the story was pub
lished Kaiser Wllhelm flew into a
rage and demanded that Miss Dea
-800 return the ring of betrothal
whirh the crown prince had placed
on her finger..
When the kaiser's embassador
sought an audience with her to de
mand the ring, which was a troas-
nred heirloom of the royal family,
alio is said to have flung it in tho
astonished officer's face and dis
missed him in a towering rage.
Miss lVacon is the daughter of
Edward Parker Deacon.

BOAT FOUND
DAVENPORT, England, Dec. 13.
—The French torpedo boat No. 108
was* found off the Cornish coast
today with no one aboard. It is
supposed that the vessol had been
abandoned during the recent heavy
gales or else lost from tow.
The vessel sustained no damage
in r.plto of the fact that this class
of rhlp3 is considered •unseaworthy.
The French government, has been
notified of the find and the French
consul will take possession.
THE WHYB OF
LOUD'S DEFEAT.
California's Congressman Angered
the War Veterans.
Washington, Dec. 13.—One
roason why Congressman Loud of
California was defeated (as the
post-mortem develops) was tho op
position of a lot of Spanish-Ameri
can war veterans. It seems they
have (and knew during election
they were going to have) a claim
bill in this congress, and a delega
tion called on Loud to elicit a prom
ise of his support for their bill. Of
course the alternative, if he declin
ed to support it, was that they
would to support him. The bill
sought to give about $800 to every
veteran of the Spanish-American*
war who tjad been brought home
from the Philippines on the govern
ment transports. It was to be "In
lieu of travel pay and rations."
Loud looked the delegation over
and finally turned to a neighbor
who was taking a prominent part
in tho ceremony.
"I am surprised to see you here,"
he said. "You are a man of prop
erty. Some of these people have
nothing and don't care. But I am
surprised to sco you engaged in this
species of robbery. Why, this is
loot! It would take $2,000,000 out
ol the treasury at the start and it
would open the way for $2,000,000,-
--000 to follow. These men have all
they are entitled to. They have
been paid and transported and
clothed at government expense.
Now, because the government could
if it minded have excercised its op
tion and given them travel pay in
stead of the travel, you come in and
seek this as a right. The claim has
no merit. It Is a raid. I will not
support it, but I will oppose it.
Good day."
NEAT SUIT OF
CHECK CHEVIOT.
Rough goods are in favor for this
season, especially cheviots. This
costume Is a neat check effect, and
Is made on rather original lines. A
suggestion of the Gibson Idea is
given In the front. The lower part,
however, is straight up and squar
ed off In an original manner. The
coat la trimmed with tabs of self
material, with a Puritan panne col
lar and large buttons covered with
the same material.
