Mitchell, Attend the district mass meetings Saturday to select delegates to the County con vention Monday. The State Democratic Ex ecutive Committee has been called to meet in Nashville, Monday, February 3rd, 1902, for the purpose of fixing the dates for the Judicial and Gubernatorial conventions. Bolivar's municipal elec tion will be held next Tues day. The ticket nominated by a large number of demo cratic voters of the town, at a meeting recently held, and which appears at the head of this column, is composed of good men. "Vote for them next Tuesday. Mr. James H. Malone has been in our county this week. Mr. Malone is one of the ablest members of the Mem phis bar and is well known and popular throughout Ten nessee. He- is a candidate for a position on the Supreme Bench. A number of coun ties have already instructed for him. He has many friends in Hardeman. Republicans Scared. The story that Dan F. Elliotte, deputy clerk of the Federal District Court, had left Memphis for Wash ington to seek the appointment to succeed U . S. Marshal i homas 11. Baker, ha3 been contradicted by Judge Hammoud. He has gone to Buffalo to testify in a criminal pros ecution. However, the impression obtained for a while among republicans that Mr. Elliotte had been called toWash ington by the President to be tend ered the office of United States Mar shal for the Western District of Tennessee, and very naturally they felt chagrined that the President would ignore applicants in his own party and give a big federal plum to a democrat. As to who may succeed Marshal Baker is a question. If the party feud is permitted to iuflaence the selection of a man, the chances for Col. Baker aDDear to be slim. If the President should conclude to ignore thf party, Mr. Elliotte stands a show of securing the place. Jack son Sun. The Teachers' Institute at Toone January 25, 1902. 1. Welcome Address W. H. The sweet spirit of Mrs. Eugenia Carter, wife of Mr. Carter, in the nineteenth year of her age, parted from its earthly tenement and jour neyed, Oct. 26, 1901, to that bright home above where sin and sorrow never come. "When the trumpet of the Lord shall souod and time shall be no more. And the morning breafcs, eternal, bright and fair; When the saved of earth shall gather over o the other shore, And the roll is called up yonder," she "will be there!" Weep not, dear husband and pa rents; your loss is Heaven s gain. And we know that God has promised that the faithful shall meet again in that beautiful home beyond the stars where fart wells are never said. By her departure from this life our earthly ties are severed and another link is welded in the chain that binds and lifts us up to the brighter life. We commend the bereaved ones to the care of Him who knows our sorrow and who alone can solace in grief. We rest in the hope that "Erery fear is wiped away, Sighs no more shall heave her breast; Xight is lost in endless day, Sorrow, In eternal rest." A. Fkieni. New Country Comfort. Blaza was ambitious to relieve the financial situation in the Philippines. He had heai d of the ef forts of the Philippine Commission to secure the passage by Congress of a currency law for the Philippines and he felt the lack of funds. When he. came into possession of several large packages of Confed erate notes be concluded that he held the solution of the money prob lem. He took no one into his con fidence and the officials in Manila continued to clamor for a currency law, ignorant for a lime that Blaza was working diligently to increase the amount of money in circulation. Then came a complaint from one of the banks that they had received a great many Confederate $lu0 bills from native and Chinese merchants. According to a report just received at the War Department th com plaints became more numerous, and suddenly it was realized that the city had been Hooded with notes of the Confederacy. The detectives went to work, but for a time were unable to find the souice of supply. The Secret Ser vice was called upon, and one dav captured Blaza They put an end to his dream of wealth He protested it was good money, but the wily Filipino failed to con vince the Manila sleuths. They de clared their intention to search his house. He was delighted. They searched iiwvaiu, aud he was corres pondingly happy, but when three large packages, each containing huudreds of notes, were found, his countenance became impassive and his mouth tightly sealed. The flood of Confederate money had subsided, but the Secret Service men are now looking for a trace of two volunteer soldiers who had the money shipped to them from the United States and used Blaza as a confederate.
