Treatment of Humours of the
Blood, Skin and Scalp.
,;I wish to give my testimony to
the efficiency of the Cuticura Reme
dies in what seems to me two some
what remarkable cases. I had a
number of skin tumours small
ones on my arms which had never
given me serious trouble ; but about
two years ago one came on my
throat. At first it was only about as
large as a pinhead, but, as it was in
a position where my collar, if not
just right, would irritate it, it soon
became very sensitive and began to
grow rapidly. Last spring it was
as large, if not larger, than a bean.
A little unusual irritation of my
collar started it to swelling, and in
a day or two it was as large as
half an orange. I was very much
alarmed, and was at a loss to de
termine whether it was a carbuncle
or a malignant tumor.
Mv friends tried to persuade mo
to consult my physician ; but dread
ing that he would insist on using
the knife, I would not consent to
go. Instead I got a small bottle of
Cuticura Resolvent and a box of Cu
ticura Ointment. I took the former
according to directions, and spread
a thick layer of the Ointment on a
linen cloth and placed it on the
swelling. On renewing it I would
bathe my neck in very warm water
and Cuticura Soap. In a few days
the Cuticura Ointment had drawn
the swelling to a head, when it
broke. Every morning it was opened
with a ' large sterilized needle,
squeezed and bathed, and fresh
Ointment put on. Pus and blood,
and a yellow, cheesy, tumorous
matter came out. In about three or
four weeks time this treatment
completely eliminated boil and
tumor. The soreness that had ex

The accompanjing illustration is a
diagram of a home-made hatcher,
which I have used with great success
for two years. Take three boards 12
feet long, 14 inches wide, and construct
a pen 12 by 6 feet. From corner K
to point L, 14 inches, nail a three-inch
board from end to end to point M. Then
divide that side of pen into nests, using
scrap boards, if necessary, for parti
tions, making each nest 14 inches
square, placing a narrow board direct-
it y f r r ft ti m.
ly below Tj if on edge to secure parti
tions. The top of hatcher on side of
oiests may be covered with one wide
board running full length. Or if one
has time, money and tact the cover
of each nest may be hung with hinges
at points 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Leather makes
a good hinge. At point C place a
board upright wide enough to make
the pen dark and secure the hen in the
inclosure. Now construct runways
for "the hen where she may eat and
-drink at will. These runs are best
made of lath, and should extend from
L to X, and 14 inches wide, giving each
hen a separate inclosure, excluding all
intruders. These slat covers slip un
der board Tj and board X. As soon as
a hen wishes to sit. place her at night
on eggs in one of these nests, fastening
her in securely with board at C C, mak
ing the pen quite dark, and let her
remain until feeding till toward night
the next day. Then let her out into
the runway to eat ard drink. She will
return to nest and require no more
care. The earth in the runways should
be loose and si few ashes thrown in,
that the hen may have her required
dust-bath. It is best to fill the entire
12 nests at one time, or half of them
at least. 'When my flock is small, and
I wish to rush the chickens, I give the
12 broods to three or four hens, and
reset the hens, if they seem healthy
and not needing rest. I use tomato
cans fastened securely in corner of
runway for water. This hatcher may
be made larger or smaller, as one's
needs demand. Last year I hatched
129 chicks from 150 eggs set in this
hatcher. J. K. Sexson, in Agricultural
EARLY HATCHED CHICKS.
They Slake i he Best Winter Layers
anil Are More Profitable in All
We find by experience that earlj'
hatched chickens are always best.
We set our incubator early in April
and in November the pullets begin
to lay. In the latter part of the
summer pullets are as large as the
old hens. Early pullets make our
best winter layers, and the eggs
from them are much better for
hatching purposes than from late
hatched chicks. The eggs are larger,
with more vitality in them. They
will hatch a larger per cent, of
chicks that will live and grow well,
than will eggs from late hatching
A late hatched chick will never at
tain the si.e of an early one. The
early one gets its full size while the
weather is warm and the forage is
abundant, but the late one has to
make the finish in the winter on dry
feed in confinement. Nothing grows
so well in confinement as when left
to run at will. Late hatched chickens
grow very nicely while they have a
chance to run, but winter comes on
while they are yet growing and they
go into the house and stay rather
than wade in the snow. The change
is so sudden and unnatural that the
rapid growth stops and they become
stunted; never getting so large as
they would had the3' got their prop
er growth during warm weather. 1
believe if the plan of keeping late
hatched pullets for breeders was fol
lowed for a long term of years that
the fowls would become smaller from
year to year until they would become
