The residents of this village were shocked hist Thursday night when it was reported that Mrs. Caroline Holstein had been shos and killed at the home of her father in the north part of the village by George Lamouriux, who then ended his own life by shoot ing himself in the head. It is four years since HAWK THE TOMA- has had to chronicle such a fearful tragedy as that enacted at the Beaupre home last Thursdaj' night. Four years ago Peter King played the roll of murderer and suicide when he shot and instantly killed Maude Sweet and then took his own life. The facts in Thursday night's tragedy as near as can be learned from the only eye witness, the dead woman's little brother James, who is bed ridden as the result of an auto accident three years ago, areas follows: George Tamouriux cam-e to this reservation some time last spring and had been employed at odd jobs around town, lately being employ ed by Peter Martin in the capacity of stage driver between this place and Ogema. He became acquaint ed with Mrp. Holstein, who wasthere divorced from her husband some time ago, and had been keeping company with her for the past six months, he was extremely jealous and had threatened her several times. He had supper at her home on Thursday evening and about 8 o'clock he and Mrs. Hols tein were standing near the stove engaged in conversation whpn &he turned and started to walk away across the room, Lunouriux then pulled a revolver and shot her through the head, the bullet en tered behind the right ear andonly came out through the right cheek, he then placed the weapon to his forehead and sent a bullet through his brain Both died instantly. Coroner Nunn of Detroit was notified by telephone and arrived early Fruity morning, and after viewing the remains give a verdict of murder aud suicide. Mrs. Caroline Holstein was the daughter of Paul and Nancy Beaupre and has ali,,avs borne a good reputation here. She was married eleven years ago to B-jnj.unen Holstun, from whom she was recently divorced. Four children resulted from tins union, namely Emma May, Mar rian, Bemjunen and Robert, aged 8, 11, 7 and 4 years respectfully All four children were asleep up stairs with the grandfather when the tragedy occurred. Lamouriux, who is a mixed blood Indian from Wyoming, came to this reservation from the Sioux reservation, Rosebud, S. D,, where he was marn Ui Sioux woman from whom he was trying to obtain a divorce. That he had contemplated his dastardly act is evident from the following letter found in his pocket after the crime: "White Earth, Minn. Dec. 11th, 11)16. Dear friends and relatives: Do not blame me for what has happened to us, for Caroline Hols tein is the cause of this, what hap pened to us she is to blame, now our troubles are over." On the reverse side of the sheet of letter paper was written -"Geo. Tamouriux that is my name, notify E. J. Farlow, Lander, Wyoming.'' As the letter was written on Monday he evidently lanned to carry out the crime at that time but did not have the opportunity. Besides the four small children the unfortunate woman leaves a father and several brothers and sisters to mourn her loss. Funeral service for Mrs. Hols- tein were held Saturday from the Catholic church and interment took place in the Catholic cerae tary. The remains of Lamouriux were taken to Ogema to await direc tions frow Wyoming as to its dis posal. Check Payment Debauch- ery. "For many years and in many lo calities there was a reign of de bauchery when large payments were made,, says Cato Sells, com missioner ot Indian affairs, recent- ly.' 'To remedy this condition we sought and found a never before enforced federal statute empower ing the comiiissioner of Indian affairs to suspend payments when it appeared to him that liquor was within the ready reach of Indians receiving the payments. "Perhaps the greatest abuse in this respect existed among the Osage Indians in Oklahoma. More than a year ago, when about to make a large payment there, we notified the county and city offic er the head men of the tribe and the business men of the commun ity that not a dollar would be paid until we had satisfactory assurance of the strict enforcement of this statute. The immediate effect was pandemonium. But when it was discovered by all concerned that would be no relenting or compromise, every county and city officer, the heac men of the tribe aud fifteen hundred citizens, including nearly every business man in Pawhuska, the county seat of Osage county, gave us their written promise and obligation to aggressively enforce the law if we would proceed with the payment. With this assurance the payment was made, and Osage county has since been one of the dryest lo calities in the United States, with exceedingly gratifying results, not to the Indians, but to the business men and tax payers of that vicinity. We have since carried out this same procedure everywhere throughout the Indian country of the United States. During the recent several mil lion dollar payment from the ac cumulated funds of the Chicka saw's and Choctaws, we invited the governor, attorney general and all officers enforcing state and federal laws to vigorously join with us in preventing the introduction and sa'e of liquor into Oklahoma, the immediate result of which way that the Indian bureau's special officers for the suppression of the liquor traffic found in the posses sion of a county attorney, then running for the legislature, a large qmntity of beer for distribution, lie was arrested, and will be vig orously prosecuted, to the end that he may suffer the full penalty of the law, not only because be is a violator, but for the additional reason that he was a law-enforce ment officer, and consequently even more guil than a bootlegger who conducts his criminal busi ness.
