Indians Claim Rich Oil
Lands.
14,000,000 Acres in Oklahoma and Texas
Said to Belong to Members of
Cherokee Tribe.
Washington, D. CClaims to
14,000,000 acres of land in.Texas
and Oklahoma, including the cities
of Tulsa and Oklahoma City and
practically the entire Burk Bur
nell oil field was filed in the Su
preme Court in this city the first
of the month in behalf of the
Cherokee Indian nation, supported
by government patent issued by
President Van B'jren and certified
as authentic by the Interior De
partment.
The claim was in the form of a
petition for permission to inter
vene in the Red River oil land
case, an original suit between
Texas and Oklahoma, involving
jurisdiction over the valuable oil
fields situated along the commoD
boundary.
The motion was filed by John
M. Taylor, a grand nephew of
General Zachary Taylor, as attor
ney for the Cherokee Nation. He
said the patent was discovered
accidently among the papers of a
deceased chief of the tribe.
Indian Organizations are
Step in the Right Direction.
(Concluded from 1st Page.)
and is doing for the CUippewas of
Minnesota cannot be over estimat
ed. Since its organization eight
years ago, the General Council has
kept a watchful eye on the -affairs
of the Chippcwas of Minnesota
to their great benefit. During the
past three or four years the Gener
al Council has saved many thous-_
ands of"dollars of Chippewa mon
ey, and has accomplished more
in this short period than was
ever accomplished before.
There is no doubt but that the
Indian Bureau will do everything
in its power to discourage Indian
organizations, because they realise
that Indian organizations mean
the losing of their power over the
Indian people. Organization to
the Indian*) means preparing them
selves for that glorious day when
they will not be ruled by tne In
dian Bureau any longer. That
time is coming as sure as freedom's
flag waves over this land of
liberty-loving people.
Encouraging Fact
1 know of no more encouraging fact
than the unquestionable ability of man
to elevate his life by a conscious en
deavor. It is something to be abl# to
paint a particular picture* or to carve
a statue, and so to make a few objects
beautiful, but it Is ftff more glorious
to carve and paint the very atmos
phere tmd medium through which we
look, which morally *e cando.
