Our editorial career lias been of
only one week's duration, and yet,
our experience-has been an event
ful one. Grape and banister frbifa.
a brother editpr, and two hostile
demonstrations* The ball was set
in motion by Mr. Bogen, who gav$|
us a 'fearful raking' over the coal$,
because we spelled the word exist
ence in our prospectus, 'existance.''
Although this error of ours was of
small dimensions, the blast we got
about it, not from Gabriel's trumpet,
but from Bogen's, was huge and
caused such a clattering of
our teeth, and shaking of our
limbs, that all the quinine in
our drug shop was inadequate to stop
it. We had barely got over our a
foresaid grief when in conies a rural
chap, with blood in his eye, who
swore he'd lick the editor for not
publishing a communication in re
gard patsnt hobby of his. Not be
ing a fighting editor, and the fellow
not being personal-y acquainted with
us, we palmed him oif with "Editor
not in."
We were about congratulating
ourselves upon our lucky escape,
when in stepped another gentleman,
who gave us regular fits for saying
something that he thinks we should
not have said. One goes lor you be
cause you didn't, and the ether be
cause you did. Who wouldn't be
an editor
The week's experience has given
us an inkling of what we may ex
pect in the future, so we have taken
Time by the forlelock, and brought
our small arms into close proximity.
Two small howitzers have been or
dered, one of which will be placed
on each side of our office entrance.
So you "fellers" that come in to in
terview the editor with hostile in
tentions, better "look a leetle out."

By a late ruling of Attorney Gen
eneral Devens, an army officer who
accepts a consular or diplomatic
appointment forfeits his place in the
army, even if he is on the retired
list. This ruling effects Capt. Batteari
and General Sickles, and deprives
them of a very comfortable income.
On Jan. %n(l a car-load of nitro
glycerine, on the Chicago & North
western railroad, exploded while
being loaded, a mile north of Ne
gaunee, Mich., causing the death of
seven men. The engine, car, and
telegraph lines were entirely demol

to the air and thrown fifty feet and
landed in a confused mass of wood
and iron. Only four of the killed
blown to atoms, no piece larger than
two pounds being found.
