Amusing Incident On an ISngllah Hall
way.
So long as boys are permitted to go
about loose, one is liable to meet with,
them, and I met with a specimen only
last week which I shall Dot easily forget.
I was starting for the Waterloo station
by an afternoon train for Hampshire,
and meeting with four nuilitary friends
who were going to Farnboro' station
(for Aldersbot), I got into their carriage.
Beside us five, there was an Eton boy.
There is no mistaking that description of
the race they are always dressed in
4 the height of fashion in the vacations
although at school they delight in a hat
with half its brim off, and, moreover, they
all wear stiff little white ties, which give
them the appearance of duodecimo min
isters and some juvenile religious sect.
The little wretches are as haughty and
reserved as North American Indians and
the individual of fourteen years of age or
so, whom we had on this occasion for our
fellow-traveler, looked aa though the
entire railway station, plant, and valuable
house property adjacent belonged en
tirely to himseli. soldier friends,
howevera class which has generally a
proper contempt for boyspaid no sort
ot attention to him, and as for me, I was
delighted to ignore his presence.
"Now, Jack," said my friends, two of
whom were miy college chums, and all of
them intimates, ''you will let us smoke,
we know, although not fond of it your-
self."
'Well," replied I, "it will probably
make me ill but otherwise I have no
objection."
As soon as the train began to move they
accordingly lit their cigars they had not,
however, taken three puffs before the child
in the white cravat (whose wishes nobody
had thought of consulting) requested, in
that half-hoarse, half-squeaking voice
peculiar to his period of life, that they
should put their cigars out,' because smok
ing was offensive to him, and contrary to
the by-laws.
The officers stared as though the car
riage-lamp had uttered an observation,
and then all four burst out into a roar of
laughter.
"You will find it no laughing matter,
gentlemen, when you get to Farnboro',"
said the Etonian "or, at all events, the
joke will cost you two pounds apiece.
You have been warned, as the Act directs
I object to your smoktng in tins carriage."
"Then get into another, you little brute,"
observed Pepperpot, oF the 110th "in-
deed, I have a great mind to dron you
out of the window as we go along."
I will thank you for your name and
address," returned the phenomenon, stiff
ly here is my card at your service.

Once more did Pepperpot glance at the
window and even stretched his hand to
ward this human gadfly, as though he
would have nipped him up between fin
ger and thumb but with a rueful look at
his companions, he presently cast his be

forty shillings a piece for a forty minutes
ride?
"That's right," observed the young
gentleman, approvingly, returning his
wateh to his pocket, and. re engaging

sense of disgraceful defeat oppressed the
spirits of my friend?. They said a great
number of severe things against the com
mon enemy: but he never lifted his eyes
from the exciting details of the Champion
Fight of the Light Weights, which ap
peared to aford him intense though tran
quil satisfaction. When the soldiers got
out at Farnboro', I observed his eyes
twinkle with especial merriment but I
could not be certain that he was enjoying
victory untill the train began to move
again. N sooner, however, had we left
the platform, then the Etonian burst into
such a series of fits of laughter that they
actually rumpled his neckcloth. be
came, in short, to my horror, a boy in one
of its most ordinary and repulsive forms.
I think I did 'em, eh, old stick-in-the-
mud?" obs rved he, when he had got a
little breath.
You deprived four gentleman of an
hour's pleasure," returned I, haughtily.
"Yes, but I deprived mpself as well,"',
returned 1he diminutive one, producing
from his pocket a briar-root pipe. "I
can't go without my tobacco myself with
out great inconvenience."
"What!" cried I "you are not going
to smoke yourself, young monkey*'
"Aain't I, though?" interrupted the
Etonian, nodding in an offensively-famil
iar manner. "If those fellows had been
civil, and asked my permission to smoke
as well as yours, I would have given
them each a better cigar than the line
are accustomed to, I flatter myself but
since they choose to carry matters with a
high hand, you secpuff, puff, and got
hold of the wrong man for that sort of
thing, puff, puff, why, they have to take
the consequences."
But I will not permit you to smoke,
young sir," observed I. indignatly or, if
you do (for I shrank from a personal con
test with the audacious child), you shall
pay a couple of sovereigns out of your
pocket-money at the next station."
Excuse me," returned the Etonian,
blandly "the by-law says, 'if objected
to now when your friends inquired
whether you would allow them to smoke,
Jack -smoke-jack by-the-by, that's fun
nywhen your friendspuff, puffde
manded that, you replied, lor I heard you,
that you had no objection."
And that awful specimen ot the genus
Boy smoked undeterred, like a limekiln,
till we both jjot out at Weymouth
where, if I had my way, he should have
been taken to Portland Prison, and kept
there until such time as he should be no
longer a boy.

from the plattorm awoke the child and
made it cry, and its mother got up and
was leaving the hall, when the minister

me." "It isn't for lhat, sir, I leave," she
replied, with a perfect unconsciousness of
sarcasm "it's you disturbs the baby.''

made upon the American Neimpaper Union by

copies, and advertisements are charged at 50 cents a
line. The American Newspaper nion gives an adver

Times thinks the American Newspaper Union List a

The weekly edition cf the New York Post Is 8,450
copies, and advertisemen a charged at 10 cents a
line. The American Newspaper Union gives advertise
ment 3.450 copies circulation for less than 3 cents a
lioe. The Post don't think very well of the American
Newspaper Unio
The New York Commercial Advertiser prints a week
ly edition of 3,500 copies and charges advertisers 10cents
a line. The Advertiser has a poor opinion also of the
American Newspaper Union.
The Boston Post weekly issues 3,500 copies, charges'
advertisers 12& cents a line, nnd expresses doubts of
the honesty of the American Newspaper Union, which
gives that circulation for .ess than one-fourth the price
which the Post demands.
The Boston Advertiser charges 12Ji cents a line for
advertising in a weekly having 2,5u0 circulation, and
warns its readers to beware of an Institution which
gives 2.500 circulation for 2 cents a line.
The Toronto Ulobe ints the best weekly in Canada,
has 20,003 circulation and charges 25 cents a line. The
Globe has contempt for the .merican Newspaner
Union whicngives 20,000 circulation for 16 cents a line.
The Utica Herald prints 6,432 copies of weekly edition
which advertisers are allowed to use at 10 cents a line.
It joins in a crusade against the American Newspaper
Union, which gives 6,432 circulation for 5 cents a line.
The Warsaw, N. Y. Democrat prints 1,530 copies, and
eha rges advertisers 8 cents a lint. When it was a co
operative paper only a cent a line was demanded for
its columns, and it is no better now than it was then.
The St. Louis weekly Post sells 11,912 copies weekly to
Germans in and around St. Louis Its advertising rates
are 10 cents a line, and are very low, but because the
American Newspaper Union gives 11,912 weekly circu
lation to an advertisement for 9 cents a line the Post
despises and speaks unkindlt of it.
The Loo port, N. Y., Weekly Times prints 120 copies,
and charges adAerti ers 6X cent a Una. When the
Lockport Weekly Times becomes a co operative paper
advertisers can use its columns at, a cent a line,
which is all the Ameriaan Newspaper Union demands
for papers of like circa ation and influence.
