Of late large numbers of coins have been received in the treasury which are stamped on one side with ad vertisements. The stamps used are some sort of die which cuts letters and words into the coin. In most instances the name of tho owner of the article advertised is not cut on the coin, but the advertisement simply recommends a certain nostrum or article. As the coin is stamped only on one side, it can be passed very readily, exposing only the perfect side. This is a mutilation of the currency and a violation of the law. The secret service has been di rected to investigate this and hunt out and prosecute the offenders. Joel Chandler Harris, the author ol ''Uncle Remus," is a printer, and he puts his compositions into type without writing them. His fame came to him as a surprise, and he has not yet quit* recovered from his astonishment. J. A. Bell, an ex-member of the Ken tucky legislature, who, having become incensed at a negro, took him, with the aid of two companions, to a stabie, tied his hands and feet, and gave him a furious whipping, has been forced to pay 1750. A "Magazin de Confections," in Paris, had employed one of those hu man sign-boards, a perambulating ad vertisement but at the end of a month, deriving no advantage from the experi ment, the proprietor sent a clerk to watch his man,,and discovered that the latter passed the whole day in that san dy solitude, the Esplanade des Inva lides. "Hullo, there! What the deuce are you here for?" cried the clerk. The perambulating advertisement re Eate lied, with an indescribable smile, "1 so to be in a crowd!" i 1 Didn't Like Her Month. A strange case of matrimonial infe licity has been in progress on East Market street during the past week. The "deserted wife" in this case has long been a sufferer from defective teeth, and has passed many a sleepless night on account of the toothache. About a week ago she .called upon a physician for relief, and he informed her that it was useless to expect relief except by the aid of the dentist's for ceps. She then called upon a dentist, and after examining them he informed her that every tooth would have to come out before she would be free from pain. It was rather unwelcome, news, but she had suffered so long and tried so many remedies in vain that without more ado she mounted the dental chair, and in a few minutes the dentist re moved the old snags that had been the source of so much annoyance, and she returned home. When her husband re turned from his work that evening, he looked at her in perfect amazement a moment, and asked her what in the world she had been doing to make her so ugly. She showed mm that her teeth had all been pulled out, which caused the changed expression, when he suddenly wheeled about and utter ing an expression of disgust he left the house, and has not returned yet. He has taken board several squares away from his home and refuses to go back home. The wife is nearly heart-broken to think that in getting rid of the tooth ache she lost a husband.Louisville Courier-Journal. Race Proscription. Chambers's Journal, usually a very liberal paper, lately said: "Household ers in London are plagued with showers of blacks. Alighting where they list, they inti'ude themselves into all, even the best regulated dwellings. By or dinary arrangements you cannot keep out blacks. They come in by doors and windows. They disfigure the equip ments of the drawing-room, and are execrated for their noxious presence everywhere. Blacks are the torment of London, worse even than the fogs, the typhoid emanations of the sewage, or the drinking water, which it might not be pleasant to analyze. We enter! ain the notion that they are endured as an incurable evil. They are no more to be averted than the east wind. Could not something be attempted to exclude the blacks?" It may not be out of place to add that "blacks" is the Eng lish word for "soot." Dancins the Indians Into Subjection. The United States troops that were despatched to Kesliena at the time the Apaches were hoeing it down so lively in their great war dance, have gone iuto winter quarters in order to boon hand for the next dance. The army (says a Western paper) has been light ly spoken of by the press in connection with Indian campaigns, but it is believed that the soldiers, shod as they are with government shoes, would be a holy ter ror at a dance. Death would be t'ie portion of all creeping things, and the Indian who got away without having his feet mashed would be lucky indeed. This, then, appears to be the happy settlement of the Indian question. Tiie untutored children of the forest are to be deluded into dancing with the sol of the regular army, and then, if they ever leave their reservations to go on the war-path, they will go in per ambulators with their feet bound up in pieces of blanket. 1lS* Lazy Uoys. A lazy boy makes a lazy man, just as sure as a crooked sapling makes a crooked tree. Whoever saw a boy grow up in idleness that did not make a shiftless vagabond when he became a man, unless he had a fortune left him to keep up appearances? The great mass of tbieves, criminals and paupers have come to what they are by being brought up in idleness. Those who constitute the business part of the com munitythose who make onr great and useful menwere taught in their boy* hood to be industrious, ns^sa^. NEW ULM REVIEWf WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 1,1882 th ancient races Mexico, lias oome to the conclusion that it docs not exist. He considers that the former peoplo were but little advanced beyond the modern Indians, but that they were dif ferent. In the discussion that followed the reading of Dr. De Haas' paper in the association, Judge Henderson ob jected to the teim "!nound-buildel,', as one that conveyed afaise idea. There is no evidence, he snid, which will jus tify us in separating the ancient and more modern races, not a single fea ture peculiar to the so-called mound builders. The speaker had started out in the study of American archaeology with the impression that these people were distinct and separate from the In dians, but he had been compelled by the force of facts to relinquish the the ory. It was improper to talk about these people as mysterious, for they were no more mysterious than the Shawnees, the Natchez, the Tensas, and other tribes. The cloth found in their works was like that made by every tribe from the lakes to the gulf, even less tine than some, and their pottery was no better. In short, the speaker said, in his opinion the mound-builders were the ancestors of the Indians.Popular Science Monthly. MRS. LYD1& E. PINKHAM, OF LYNN, MASS., t, ^*i^ LYDIA E.
